Jabber IMPS Server and Jabber Messenger 4.0 for Symbian, Windows Mobile, and J2ME Now Available

Jabber IMPS Server and Jabber Messenger 4.0 for Symbian, Windows Mobile, and J2ME Now Available DENVER--Oct. 4, 2005-- New Wireless Clients and Server to Speed Adoption of Extended Presence Services, Herald Coming Age of Protocol Convergence and Device and Network Interoperability Jabber, Inc. today announced the immediate availability of Jabber Messenger 4.0 wireless clients for Symbian, Windows Mobile, and Java 2 Platform Micro Edition (J2ME) Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) 2.0, along with Jabber IMPS, an extension of its flagship Jabber XCP server. Taken together, Jabber, Inc. says that its newest mobile client and server products closely bridge the capabilities and user experiences of desktops and wireless devices. The Jabber Instant Messaging and Presence Service (Jabber IMPS) server allows telecom operators already using the Jabber Extensible Communications Platform (Jabber XCP) to deliver advanced presence-based services to the wide array of IMPS handsets already on the market. Jabber Messenger 4.0 clients have been enhanced to provide a richer feature set and extensive branding capabilities for customers and partners seeking to configure and brand mobile clients in the way that best suits end-user preferences. The latest release of these enhanced clients augment Jabber, Inc.'s mobile client portfolio, which already includes versions for PocketPC and RIM Blackberry. The Jabber IMPS server extension further compliments Jabber XCP's interoperability suite, which currently supports Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), Short Message Service (SMS), and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) for Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions (SIMPLE).

"Seamlessly moving between fixed and mobile platforms, as well as providing interoperability between standards-based presence and messaging protocols, is a real breakthrough in our offering," said Tony Bamonti, president of Jabber Telecom. "The enhanced interface and functionality offered in Jabber Messenger 4.0 mobile clients allows us to deliver desktop functionality to the small screen while the Jabber IMPS server gives operators and their customers extensive device flexibility as they drive extended presence services into a wireless world."

"Consumers and business users should appreciate the Jabber, Inc. mobile clients' ability to offer similar rich features and functionality to the desktop experience, so they can move seamlessly between the two," said Robert Mahowald, program director at IDC. "Operators face the constant threats of industry competition and customer churn each month, and the ability to provide highly customizable interfaces will help them to enhance their individual branding."

Currently deployed by leading wireless operators including Orange as part of their mobile presence and instant messaging platform, Jabber Messenger 4.0 for Symbian and Windows Mobile offers a rich set of functionality, including:

  • Inviting, graphical, tab-based interface
  • Direct Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) sockets and native push for better connectivity and functionality
  • Connection type presence indicators (i.e. "available/mobile" and "busy/desktop")
  • Typing indication on message replies
  • Ability to import contacts to instant message from address books
  • Ability to add friends by their phone number
  • User defined sound notifications for messages and user online/offline alerts
  • Wide variety of emoticons (smileys)
  • User controlled white and blacklisting (permission and blocking) of users
  • Integration with Jabber XCP Waitlist component for viral marketing capabilities

Jabber IMPS Server 4.0 has been tested for compatibility with most pre-installed manufacturer and third party IMPS clients through Jabber, Inc. quality assurance testing of select LG, Motorola, Nokia, Sagem, Siemens, and SonyEricsson devices, as well as participation in recent Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) Test Fest events. Compatibility testing has focused on support for the core features of both OMA IMPS 1.1 and 1.2 specifications, as well as other key features including:

  • Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), Wireless Session Protocol (WSP), and WAP CIR binding
  • Reactive presence
  • Proactive presence
  • Group messages
  • Group chat
  • Contact list management (including black and white listing)
