Volantis Transcoder Enables Mobile Devices to Automatically Access Millions of PC Web Pages

Guildford, UK – 20th October 2005: Volantis, the world’s leading supplier of Intelligent Content Adaptation™ solutions for the Mobile Information Age, today announced the availability of Volantis Transcoder™, a server-based solution that automatically converts PC websites in real-time into mobile format for over 1,700 mobile devices.

Volantis Transcoder enables mobile network operators, search engine providers, content providers and enterprises to deploy an out-of-the-box mobile Internet experience to a large population of mobile phone users, which is individually optimized for each mobile device and requires no special device software or configuration.

“Volantis Transcoder allows consumers to reach PC websites previously inaccessible on mobile devices,” said Matt Harris, Chief Executive Officer of Volantis. “Consumers can view a large amount of practical and time-sensitive information, including searching richer news sites, viewing office location maps while en route to meetings, reading blogs, and searching for products in online stores and marketplaces. Volantis Transcoder can be coupled with search engines, so searched-for sites are easily converted to mobile, further enhancing consumer usefulness.”

Without transcoding, the vast majority of PC websites either fail to display or are very difficult to use on mobile devices because they are not optimised for mobile requirements. Such PC-to-mobile challenges include unsupported mark-up languages, layouts that are optimized for PCs, the numbers of images included and the overall size of the file. Previously, even when sites can be rendered the user experience may be poor: page loading is very slow and consumers find it difficult to navigate.

These challenges are overcome by Volantis Transcoder, running on a powerful central server, which uses a two-stage process to intelligently convert PC websites in real-time to mobile format:

  • Step 1: Volantis Transcoder, analyzes the PC website and reformats web pages for mobile. This includes eliminating “pan and scan” by re-factoring to a smaller screen, pagination, reducing image size and format to fit the screen and reduce transmission time, filtering out content/mark-up not digestible on mobile devices, relocating form elements, reordering components, table flattening, and identifying and abstracting menus to separate pages.

  • Step 2: Volantis Transcoder, utilizes Volantis Intelligent Content Adaptation Platform to deliver pages that are optimized to match the capabilities of individual devices. Using device detection and a database with more than 350 attributes of over 1,700 devices, pages are assembled into the device’s native format, packaged for optimal presentation and performance, and transmitted to the device.

Volantis Transcoder also supports configurable header and footer areas so that operators and content providers can retain branding or insert additional elements such as links, help pages and disclaimers within their mobile Internet offering.
