Company to Support Shift From Palm OS to Microsoft-Powered Palm Treo PDA
CAMBRIDGE, MA, U.S.A. -September 27, 2005-- Perhaps the worst kept secret was confirmed when Microsoft, Palm and Verizon confirmed and unveiled the "Treo 700W" that will run on the Windows Mobile 5.0 platform. As a result, SYWARE, Inc. reiterated that it will provide a specific help desk for Palm OS users who will need to consider transitioning field PDA applications with the expected eventual transition to Windows Mobile. The help desk will be activated when Palm ships the Treo 700W version with Windows Mobile. Many current Palm users-- and Palm's community of 400,000 software developers-- will need to start preparing, or considering, moving existing or future applications to this new platform to continue to enhance their business mobility. SYWARE's Visual CE Mobile Database and Application Development product and its integrated products for wireless synchronization and remote printing will allow this to take place without needing to hire new programmers to learn and use Visual Basic. SYWARE requires no programming to develop robust PDA applications on Windows Mobile PDAs.
Jonathan Spira, Chief Analyst at IT research firm Basex, Inc. recently stated "…this was something long in coming. There's no question that in order to gain market share, Palm had to adopt Windows Mobile. Palm has been looking for direction for many years in trying to find the best solution for its handhelds. I would expect to see Windows Mobile replace the Palm operating system across Palm's entire line. They can move the library of development code over. It's not the end of the world."
A Gartner report supports the move to Microsoft, citing that Windows CE advanced ahead of the Palm OS to become the top OS shipped in PDAs worldwide in 2004. Gartner also cited that Palm's quarterly PDA market share plummeted from 41.8% in the Q2 2004 to just 18.8% in the same quarter of this year.

In preparation for this, we are developing a special pricing and support package to assist Palm OS users who may be in need of developing or transferring handheld applications to support their business needs. This news follows a previous announcement that an international panel of industry experts, sponsored by Microsoft Germany and Pocket PC Magazine Germany, presented SYWARE with a "Best Database Software Award 2004."
