Simcom Launches New Matrix-Enabled GSM Handset Range

Shanghai Simcom (“Simcom”), a leading independent handset design company based in China, today announces the launch of a range of GSM handsets solutions enabled with Matrix high accuracy location technology from CPS (Cambridge Positioning Systems Ltd).

The three handsets solutions will meet growing demand in the Asia Pacific region for handsets that support precision location-based services in the most challenging indoor and outdoor environments.

The three models include:
  • S728: an attractive clamshell design
  • S788: a high end pda smartphone, with camera
  • S9019: an entry level slim handset with camera for mass market use

Simcom Senior Vice President and General Manager Gong Zhenjun said: “Because Matrix is a software-only integration, we can add tremendous value to our handset solutions with minimal impact – and at the same time open up a range of new value-added services for end users. There has been encouraging growth in our key markets for location-based services – and by launching a range of handset solutions we can appeal to different market sectors but offer the same Matrix performance value of high accuracy, fast location and coverage everywhere.”

CPS CEO Chris Wade added: “This is a very encouraging development. Simcom are rapidly establishing themselves as a major force in the region for quality, innovative devices. This new range is stylish, feature rich and, with the benefit of Matrix, offers Simcom a clear differentiated offering in today’s highly competitive market.”

Shanghai Simcom's, a wholly owned subsidiary of SIM Technology Group Limited (SEHK: 2000), core business focuses on the design and development solutions for mobile handsets for use by leading brands, SKD/CKD Turnkey Solutions for mobile handsets and GSM/GPRS modules for wireless communications applications.

Since it was founded in 2002, Simcom has grown rapidly to become a leading wireless communications enterprise with a staff of hundreds of senior engineers. Since 2004, Simcom successfully developed solutions which help our customers launched over a hundred new mobile handsets models including built-in cameras, color-screen SMS and MP3 functions. As a result, it was awarded the “2004 Fastest Growing Enterprise in China Mobile Market” by the influential China Centre of Information Industry Development (CCID).

The integration of CPS’s Matrix location technology enables any handset or device to be rapidly located to an accuracy of sub-100m in GSM – and less than 50m in W-CDMA networks. The modules use the existing GSM/W-CDMA network infrastructure to transfer location information to the network using standard GPRS or SMS. This greatly reduces the rollout costs traditionally associated with high accuracy mobile location technology.
