QUALCOMM's Sold-Out BREW 2006 Conference Highlights
SAN DIEGO, June 6 -- QUALCOMM Incorporated
(Nasdaq: QCOM), a leading developer and innovator of Code Division Multiple
Access (CDMA) and other advanced wireless technologies, today announced the
conclusion of the successful BREW 2006 Conference, held May 31-June 2 in
San Diego. The sold-out event attracted more than 2,500 attendees from the
world's wireless community and delivered on its promise of bringing together
mobile industry players for concentrated discourse on the increasing role of
data delivery in the wireless marketplace. With this year's theme of "BREW
Your Way," wireless operators, handset manufacturers, publishers, developers,
content providers and technology companies from more than 34 countries around
the world, highlighted their use of the BREW solution to increase both
revenues and market share.
In his keynote, "Telecom Italia's Convergence Strategy: Driving
Innovation in Europe's Most Advanced Mobile Market," Luigi Licciardi, head of
handset and technical solutions for Telecom Italia, talked about his
company's vision, as well as its plan to collaborate with QUALCOMM.
Licciardi showcased a full custom Telecom Italia user interface (UI) based on
QUALCOMM's uiOne(TM), running on a Samsung z510 WCDMA handset. He noted that
with support from Samsung and QUALCOMM, Telecom Italia was able to port their
entire custom UI implementation to the z510 in just five weeks.
"I really enjoyed the BREW 2006 Conference because it gave Telecom Italia
the opportunity to share our vision for the future and get in contact with so
many application publishers and developers who are creating interesting and
compelling services," said Licciardi. "The BREW solution offers superior
performance which leads to inherent speed and control advantages, and BREW's
porting capabilities provide fast time to market."
Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, QUALCOMM CEO, kicked off the show with a presentation
titled, "Consumer Experience -- A Glance into the Future of Wireless." On
stage, Dr. Jacobs demonstrated the capabilities of QUALCOMM's uiOne solution
and its ability to drive a contextually relevant wireless experience for
consumers. The keynote also highlighted a significant milestone underscoring
the mutual success of the BREW community.
"The growth of BREW has proven to be impressive this year with increased
users, incredible technological advancements and a countless number of new
applications and services -- all of which have resulted in more than $700
million in BREW publisher and developer earnings since the launch of the
first BREW operator in November 2001," said Dr. Jacobs. "This figure is
clearly a testament to the opportunities and revenue made possible by the
BREW solution, and is only the beginning of what QUALCOMM envisions the
future of BREW to hold for the global wireless community."
Dr. Jacobs captured the attention of the creative minds in the audience
with the unveiling of a new component of QUALCOMM's Wireless Reach program in
the form of a $1 million fund designed to increase the availability of useful
wireless applications in developing countries around the world. QUALCOMM
will award five grants totaling $500,000 for the most innovative proposals
for BREW applications in the areas of healthcare, education, public safety,
government and environment. The remaining $500,000 will be used to put the
winning proposals into action through new or existing Wireless Reach
projects.
"The BREW solution has the power to unleash 3G wireless applications that
will transform communities," said Dr. Jacobs. "QUALCOMM looks forward to the
innovation that will touch the lives of our fellow citizens through the
deployment of truly useful services designed to enhance the day-to-day lives
of millions of people on every continent."
Speaker Highlights
The BREW 2006 Conference featured more than 100 speakers, representing
leading technology, wireless and entertainment companies from around the
world. Speakers focused on the global BREW community's advancements and
opportunities in the areas of customizable UIs, mobile gaming, location-based
services, multimedia, mobile messaging, business applications and a host of
other segments. Highlights from the BREW 2006 keynotes included:
Peggy Johnson, president of QUALCOMM Internet Services and MediaFLO
Technologies, unveiled QUALCOMM's new BREW Gaming initiative and
shared how the BREW solution is evolving in her "BREW and
You -- Exploring the Evolution of Data Services" keynote. "BREW
Gaming
is a very important focus for QUALCOMM," said Johnson. "We're
committed to elevating the mobile experience with richer 3D games, and
we're driving a lot of attention to this idea of cross-platform design
and creating gaming-friendly form factors. Not only are we enabling
premium 3D titles but also supporting multiplayer experiences over
high-speed, low-latency networks."
Scott Dinsdale, executive vice president digital operations and new
technology for Sony BMG, delivered his "Why Mobile Matters to Content
Providers" presentation. He spoke about the role mobile technology
plays in marketing music and driving revenue. "We're huge fans of
BREW
and the future that we see for BREW," said Dinsdale. "We love its
media previewing capabilities and the world of services and
applications that the BREW community is building and continuing to
evolve."
During his "Get It Now!(R) (WOW!)" presentation, John Stratton, vice
president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless, shared
that
the Get It Now subscriber base has increased by more than 600 percent
over the last 36 months, but noted the company plans to use advanced
BREW capabilities to give subscribers even more options to purchase
data applications and services. "We will be offering retail cards and
Web purchasing via BREW Zone," said Stratton. "These new channels
will
give our subscribers increased flexibility, a more seamless experience
and ultimately drive continued revenue growth for the Get It Now
service."
Chris Early, studio manager for Microsoft Casual Games, gave a
presentation entitled, "What Microsoft's 'Live Anywhere' Vision Means
for Mobile Games." "BREW makes a lot of sense as one of our mobile
platforms supporting our overarching 'Live Anywhere' vision -- it's
simply a great ecosystem," said Early.
