Mobile Interactive Group's Barry Houlihan Named Ernst & Young London Young Entrepreneur of the Year
28th June, 2006: Barry Houlihan, Managing Director of global multimedia mobile services provider Mobile Interactive Group (MIG), was last night named as London Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2006 as the prestigious Ernst & Young awards ceremony held at The Royal Lancaster, London.
Since MIG’s launch in May 2004, Barry, 34, has successfully guided the company through global expansion into the Irish and Asian markets, achieving rapid financial growth and a current turnover of £22 million (2005).
In the last two years MIG has taken the mobile interactive market by storm, outperforming the industry’s leading players to secure major contracts with the ITV, FremantleMedia Licensing Worldwide/talkbackThames and O2.
Last year MIG delivered the pioneering text ticket competition for the groundbreaking Live8 concert in Hyde Park, its technology platform, which was used to process the millions of SMS messages, broke a Guinness World Record as well as winning a string on high profile mobile marketing awards.
Barry has been a rising figure in the mobile industry since 1999, when he left his position as Group Advertising Manager at publishing giant EMAP MacClaren to join the emerging mobile internet company Genie Mobile. Barry later joined O2, and left his position as General Sales Manager to set up MIG, not before securing some of the UK’s landmark interactive contracts including Big Brother 4, I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here and Pop Idol.
The Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards acknowledges the contribution that entrepreneurs make, not just to business, but to society as a whole and the risks that they take in doing so. This years judging panel, selected the winners which clearly demonstrated outstanding entrepreneurial spirit, innovation, financial performance, strategic direction and personal integrity and influence.
The 2006 London judging panel included Richard Benton, Mouchel Parkman and Public Recruitment Group, Ivan Dunleavy, Oliver Hemsley, Numis Corporation Plc, Roger McDowell, Oliver Ashworth Group, Sir Keith Mills, Loyalty Management Group and Deputy Chairman of London 2012, and Keith Willey, London Business School.
The independent judging panel said: “Barry is an impressive individual who is enthusiastic and dynamic.”
Barry Houlihan, Managing Director of Mobile Interactive Group, commented: “I spent the first twelve months as MD of MIG away at meetings and living out of a suitcase, working seven days a week. Winning this award goes to show that I’ve obviously been doing something right along the way.”
“I set up MIG with the vision to create a truly unique mobile company, with unique technology, unique people and an innovative approach that would set us apart from the pack. The success of the company and the recognition from the judging panel means I can put a tick in the box for achieving this vision.”
“Along with the support of the board and my staff I have the ambition to take this company to even greater heights and I hope we can continue to enjoy our ongoing success.”
