Cingular Wireless Investing $46 Million to Enhance Las Vegas Coverage and Services
LAS VEGAS, Nev., June 29 -- Cingular Wireless, the nation's largest wireless carrier, continues to grow its network in the greater Las Vegas area. The company today announced plans to add more than 60 new cell sites in the area this year, as part of its $46 million investment to expand the network and enhance service. Off to a fast start, 33 new cell sites are already on-air.
Cingular's network investment will have a direct impact on enhancing coverage and services for wireless consumers in communities stretching from the north end of North Las Vegas to the south end of Anthem, and Lake Las Vegas to Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. In addition to the new cell sites, the investment will deliver other improvements, including new switches, portable and permanent generators, and other enhancements to the nation's largest all-digital voice and data network.
"It's great to see the investments we're making in our network enhancing the wireless experience for our Las Vegas customers," said Tammi Terrell, vice president and general manager, Las Vegas/ San Diego/ Hawaii. "Cingular's investment shows our commitment to deliver the best network coverage and quality, and improved services to our customers here."
Cingular's network expansion includes new cell sites in these specific locations:
W Cheyenne Ave and N Cimarron Road
Cheyenne & Valley just north of the North Las Vegas Airport
Vegas Valley & Maryland Pkwy near Sunrise Hospital
Durango & Racel near Floyd Lamb State Park
Henderson Community College
US95 & Hwy 156/157
Additionally, Las Vegas customers have access to Cingular's 3G broadband network technology. With 3G, customers can access information and applications at broadband speeds in the office, on the road or at home. The advanced service -- via laptop data cards of 3G-compatible phones -- provides average mobile data connections between 400 - 700 Kbps (kilobits per second) on the downlink and bursts to more than a megabit per second.
"Last year, Cingular invested $80 million dollars in Las Vegas, adding more than 85 new cell sites and deploying our advanced 3G network -- 2006 will be another landmark year for us and for our Las Vegas-area customers," Terrell said. "Our 3G technology gives our customers a powerful network of broadband speeds and ubiquitous voice and data service."
Nationwide, Cingular spent $6.5 billion on its network in 2005 and plans to spend more than $6 billion in 2006, bringing its overall investment since the company's 2004 acquisition of AT&T Wireless to nearly $13 billion.
Network Testing
Cingular continually monitors the quality and coverage of its network. Across the country, technicians, and independent researchers will drive-test nearly 30 million miles of the network during the year to improve coverage and quality. That's the equivalent of more than 50 round trips to the moon to ensure that Cingular customers receive the best possible wireless experience in the United States.
Enhancing the Customer Experience
Cingular leads the industry in educating customers about their new service. Customers who sign up for new service at a store or kiosk receive a Cingular Service Summary with a synopsis of their calling plan and its features along with an estimated first bill. Customers who sign up over the phone or the Internet will receive a Welcome Kit Brochure with similar information through the mail.
Additionally, the company offers an interactive mapping tool at all retail locations and by calling 1-866-CINGULAR. The tool provides customers with up-to-date wireless coverage information and is designed to answer a customer's specific wireless coverage questions based on an address, street intersection, zip code or landmark.
