Extreme Networks' Scalable and Secure Wireless LAN Solution Deployed by the Santee Electric CO-OP

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct. 23 -- Extreme Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: EXTR - News) today announced that Santee Electric Cooperative, a leading energy provider in South Carolina, has implemented the SummitŪ WM wireless LAN solution and Altitude 350 access points to provide fast and automated wireless updates to its workforce.

Santee, with 150 employees, had a vision for wireless connectivity that included safe and convenient sharing of updated utility information with employees throughout its field. Santee's previous wireless LAN implementation did not allow wireless Access Points (APs) to be configured centrally and could not implement proper levels of security, making wireless both burdensome to manage and leaving the system exposed to some security threats. To solve this problem, Santee selected Extreme Networks' Summit WM wireless LAN switch that serves its headquarters and branch offices with a scalable, secure and uniform solution.

Today Santee supports field technicians throughout multiple sites across a four county region with an advanced GIS system that keeps specific information for telephone utility poles, including location and proximity to customers. Extreme Networks' SummitŪ WM Wireless LAN solution allows for the secure, rapid and convenient updates of the system by technicians with the most current field information. Technicians can pull into the Santee parking lot, rapidly download information from their truck and move to their next job.

"Extreme Networks' Summit WM wireless LAN solution gives us the flexibility, ease-of-management and important security functions that we really had to have," said Elliott Askins, IT support for Santee Electric Cooperative. "This fits well with our strategy to use wireless to provide the most relevant and timely data to our field technicians in a secure, convenient and flexible way."

"Wireless is emerging as a critical enabler of business processes, providing accurate and convenient sharing of routine information with employees, as is the case with Santee Electric Cooperative," said Scott Lucas, senior director of solutions marketing for Extreme Networks. "Our wireless LAN solutions provide a scalable and robust way for businesses to implement wireless both securely and cost-effectively.

Key Summit WM Features:
  • Ease of configuration and operation with Plug and Play installation, access domains for multiple access types and dynamic Radio Frequency (RF) management

  • Comprehensive security with a rich set of authentication and access control options, directory-integrated link security for simplifying user access management and detection of unauthorized Access Points (APs) and wireless clients

  • Voice-grade performance with high availability to meet voice service expectations with end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) and high-speed, cross-subnet roaming

    Santee Electric Cooperative
Santee Electric Cooperative was formed in the late 1930s and was chartered on December 14, 1939, after years of hard work by volunteers who scoured the countryside getting members to sign up for the service. Santee Electric Cooperative's service area includes Williamsburg County, Georgetown County west of the Intracoastal Waterway, eastern Clarendon County and southern Florence County.
