Bluetooth® Takes a Bigger Bite

Wellingborough, UK (30th October 2006) – Shipments of equipment enabled by Bluetooth wireless technology have increased tenfold in three years, to over 250 million units in 2005, according to the latest detailed report by IMS Research “The World Market for Bluetooth – 2006 Edition”. (Note that this report will be sent to Promoter and Associate members of the Bluetooth SIG. Adopter members can obtain it at a significant discount). Shipments are predicted to double this year, and are forecast to exceed one billion in 2008 and 1.5 billion in 2010.

Shipments are dominated by cellular handsets, on which the majority of the Bluetooth market depends, and associated audio headsets. “Even by the end of the decade handsets and headsets will still account for three quarters of shipments of Bluetooth-enabled equipment” assesses the analyst Fiona Thomson. “However, in five years’ time around 100 million each of notebooks, portable digital media players, and games appliances are predicted to have Bluetooth connectivity”. The impact of Bluetooth in some applications in the medium term is still in the balance, as how fast the alternative wireless technology WUSB makes headway in the PC, office equipment and digital camera markets is not yet clear. What is clear is that the penetration of Bluetooth in cellular handsets has increased enormously over the recent past, boding well for its adoption in other equipment in the future.
