RCOM to Introduce Mega Contest for Rural Mobile Users


ANGALORE, August 27, 2007: The Reliance Communications (RCOM) is all set to introduce a mega contest for rural mobile applications which aims at connecting the rural people with various mobile solutions including tips on farming and weather forecast. An independent panel of judges comprising eminent professionals would decide the entries and finalize the winners.

According to a press release here today from the RCOM, In order to boost the rural area operations it was vital that certain applications need to be developed for rural market directed at improving the life styles of the rural people. This will also help the company to strengthen its rural presence. According to the press release the contest would “delight, stimulate, entertain, educate and simplify telecommunications solutions for people living in rural areas."

The RCOM had over 20,000 assigned users who would develop mobile applications for rural areas. The Reliance Developer Programme, and mobile applications contest together works out to be an ideal gateway to the communications experience by introducing voice and data services through innovative applications meant exclusively for rural areas.

The programme targets to provide a unique platform to the developer community in rural India to develop the new uses of mobile, suggest and portray, and participate in developing “path breaking applications”. The developers will be judged according to the user interface, creativeness, exclusivity, performance and utility value of applications launched which will bring difference to the rural population, the sources stated.

The above development acquires greater significance in light of RCOMs ongoing network expansion program that would give coverage to 25,000 towns and 6 lakh villages by March 2008. In addition, RCOM has put out Rural Direct Exchange Lines (RDEL) project, providing telephone connections to over 7.37 lakh new subscribers in 203 SDCAs covering over 40,000 villages.
