WirelessDevNet.com Press Release

Bluefire Introduces 'Stand-Alone' Security Software to Address a Growing Market Need

BALTIMORE, Feb. 22 -- Bluefire, a leading developer of security solutions for wireless devices, today announced the availability of the Bluefire Mobile Security(TM) Professional Edition version 4.0 on Bluefire's website. Bluefire's Professional Edition is designed to secure devices using Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system including Pocket PC, Pocket PC Phone Edition, and Smartphone.

Bluefire developed the Professional Edition to accommodate the ever-growing mobile and wireless market. The Professional Edition offers:

  • Protection for a lost or stolen device

  • Confidentiality of information residing on the device including
email, personal banking information, or address books

  • Device security while accessing the Internet

"The use of smartphones is rapidly increasing as well as the use of data intensive web downloads on devices, including music and video," said Bluefire CEO, Mark Komisky. "It is important to Bluefire to offer always-on protection to these business professionals and prosumers, along with enterprises."

According to a recent survey conducted by Bluefire, 82% of the total respondents indicated that their use of wireless devices has increased over the past two years. Top-ranked wireless applications of these respondents include access to email (77%), remote access to corporate servers (62%), and web access (50%); 84% of respondents expressed concern with access to web-based email accounts while 67% named web access via their wireless devices as the top concern. The survey also noted that these users appear to be fully aware of the security implications of expanded smartphone use and are demanding that their companies, wireless industry suppliers, and partners do something about it.

"With certain smartphone models reaching a $99 price point, the market is rapidly moving from high-end, enterprise-only to mass market. Bluefire's Professional Edition is ideally suited for bundling and channel opportunities to reach this underserved market," said Komisky.

Komisky added that existing Bluefire customers have been evaluating pre-release versions of the Professional Edition since May 2006. Bluefire based the recent release on the customers' feedback and evaluations. Among the ease of use features is self-service password reset, which allows the end-user access to the data residing on the device if they forget their password.

Bluefire's Professional Edition is a "stand-alone" security software application resident on the device with a full feature set including:

  • Firewall
  • Intrusion prevention
  • Authentication
  • Encryption
