OpenCloud and Motorola Endorse JAIN SLEE as Telecoms Application Industry Standard
Cambridge, UK, 18 June 2007 – OpenCloud Limited, the supplier of open standards-based application servers for the deployment of next-generation convergent telecommunications services, and Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT) have signed a global OEM (original equipment manufacturer) and distribution deal for OpenCloud’s Rhino™ JAIN SLEE standard-compliant application server. This agreement underlines a growing momentum of industry support behind the JAIN SLEE specification for open standards-based telecoms application development. With OpenCloud Rhino™, operators can implement a controlled evolution to next generation networks that protects existing infrastructure investments.
The JAIN SLEE standard is stimulating innovation. With a JAIN SLEE platform, telecom operators can source applications from a variety of application vendors, and do not have to depend solely on proprietary solutions., The result is a stronger competitive environment creating a market for more innovative applications and driving down development and deployment costs.. Operators can be more proactive in their own development, and have access to a wider range of third-party applications. This enables operators to bring services to market more rapidly and unlock new revenue streams.
The OEM agreement will allow Motorola to offer to mobile operators the option of the OpenCloud Rhino application server integrated with Motorola’s Global Applications Management Architecture (GAMA). Motorola GAMA is a modular framework that includes a service delivery platform and is the foundation for Motorola’s comprehensive solutions that enable mobile entertainment, mobile commerce and other mobile experiences. Motorola selected OpenCloud’s Rhino application server for a JAIN SLEE option following extensive benchmark testing. It was chosen for its carrier-grade strengths of continuous availability, linear scalability and low latency. For operators, this provides a robust environment for deploying applications that are triggered by a network event, and work across any combination of IP-based and legacy communications infrastructures on fixed and mobile networks.
Stephen Newton, CEO of OpenCloud, said: “Our agreement with Motorola demonstrates growing support amongst key players for JAIN SLEE as the preferred industry specification. With operators around the world facing similar challenges of vendor lock-in stifling application innovation and inflating the cost of converging networks, we view this as a significant step in enabling operators to break free of these constraints and explore new service opportunities. We look forward to working with Motorola in delivering the benefits of an open standards converged telecoms platform to telecoms operator’s worldwide.”
“Telecoms operators looking for new service opportunities will benefit from the open applications development environment that standards such as JAIN SLEE promote,” said Navin Mehta, Vice President, Motorola Home & Networks Mobility. “With a JAIN SLEE option from OpenCloud in the modular Motorola GAMA Service Delivery Platform, operators can gain access to a variety of additional applications, and manage them efficiently. They can develop their own convergent applications and choose from a growing range of innovative off-the-shelf offerings that can be brought to market quickly and cost effectively. OpenCloud has demonstrated its strength in JAIN SLEE, and we see a strong benefit in working with them to offer a JAIN SLEE option for our customers.”
