Mobile Communities and Commerce Firms Like Obopay Hit the Ground Running

(SAN FRANCISCO-CA) – Trilibis Mobile, a leading provider of mobile enablement technologies, has released the latest generation of its comprehensive mobile publishing solution, SmartPath 4.0. SmartPath 4.0 enables licensees to quickly create, broadly deploy, and easily manage mobile phone applications across all major mobile platforms, carrier networks, and devices.

Version 4.0 offers SmartPath licensees a gamut of new features, including enhanced security, watermark support, and advanced caching options. Several existing licensees have already migrated to SmartPath 4.0.

“We’ve been working with Trilibis for over a year now," says John Tumminaro, CTO and Co-Founder of Obopay, "and we continue to be very impressed with both the scalability of their mobile publishing platform and the short deployment cycles for J2ME, BREW and WAP that SmartPath makes possible.”

The two companies began working together after Obopay realized in-house development would be impractical and not scalable due to the fragmentation problem prevalent in the mobile data industry. "Getting to market quickly on the broadest reach of mobile phones was a strategic necessity for us," continues Tumminaro. "Using SmartPath to quickly create and broadly deploy a rich and compelling application became the logical solution."

Developing for several application platforms, scores of network operators, and hundreds of mobile devices with a variety of screen sizes is a complex and time consuming process, according to Trilibis CEO Alex Panelli. “SmartPath takes these numerous fragmentation issues into account, enabling developers to easily design highly customizable mobile applications that are compatible with all major platforms and carriers.” With SmartPath, launching a mobile application can be accomplished in a matter of weeks, covering over 90% of all data-enabled mobile devices.

Based on Obopay’s requirements, Trilibis began a phased deployment of the new mobile payment service. Within two weeks, Trilibis delivered a J2ME client supporting over 90 handsets across multiple carrier networks. During the next month, Trilibis had added customized features to the J2ME client and deployed a full-scale BREW version accessible on over 150 phones across BREW and Java platforms. A few days later, Trilibis delivered a fully functional WAP-based version to enable Obopay’s off-deck distribution strategy. End-users could now send and receive SMS payments from their mobile device, track transaction histories, use an integrated address book with reverse look-up, and view their balances. As part of the licensing deal, Trilibis also conducted a day of SmartPath training for Obopay employees, enabling them to quickly and easily implement modifications or new features to the application UI, and dynamically deploy these changes to their customers in real-time.

Fast results like those gave Tumminaro and Obopay exactly the business edge they needed. "With SmartPath, Obopay can focus its resources on its core business of developing back end payment processes and marketing the comprehensive mobile payment service.”
