Stollmann Takes Role in Working Group for the Standardization of a Bluetooth Software Interface
Hamburg, 11 May 2007 - Stollmann has initiated the standardization of the Bluetooth Embedded Control Interface (BECI) and is chairing the Bluetooth SIG BECI Working Group created for this purpose.
The objective is to standardize an integration interface for embedded systems at the level above the Bluetooth profiles that would allow application programmers to develop Bluetooth application software independently of the Bluetooth protocol stack and chipset used. This will reduce complexity and interdependencies and, consequently, the cost of Bluetooth integration. BECI will make an important contribution toward the spread of Bluetooth technology in industrial, automotive, and medical application.
BECI will specifically support Bluetooth integration in embedded devices, which at present use only proprietary interfaces. The BECI functionality will include all Bluetooth features and support both multi-profile and multilink application. By contrast with the HCI interface, which has found general acceptance for chip-level access, BECI will facilitate this standardization process on a higher level. Stollmann expects the standard to be available by 2008.
As Christian Luehrs, Managing Director of Stollmann, puts it: "35 major independent companies are important partners with whom we will join forces to create a standard for Bluetooth integration in embedded devices. Today there are more than a billion Bluetooth devices around, especially mobile phones and headsets. The next billion will be made up of embedded systems."
Matthias Frey, Chair of the BECI Working Group, adds: "Our work will create a common standard for all embedded systems. This will greatly accelerate and simplify the product development process. The next step will be the creation of standard software, and discussion forums will spring up - in short, we will soon have a community. We see the same effects in the context of other, comparable standardization efforts."
Jennifer Bray, Head of Global Standards at CSR, who is also part of the BECI Working Group, commented, "This is a great opportunity for the automotive industry. By removing the pressure of gaining an in-depth knowledge of Bluetooth, BECI hopes to encourage application developers to widen their understanding of how to implement Bluetooth into various devices and applications."
Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG)
