Research Finds U.S. Mobile Internet Users Ready for 2D Barcode Technology
New York, NY - June 16, 2006 - Scanbuy, a global leader in mobile marketing solutions, today announced the results of a consumer study revealing strong demand for 2D barcode technology among U.S. mobile Internet users. The survey, the first of its kind in the U.S., found that 83 percent of mobile Internet users are likely to use Scanbuy's 2D barcode platform ScanLife.
The study was conducted by the international firm Research Now, with data analysis provided by the research consultancy group Clear Ideas. It surveyed people who own a camera phone and have accessed the mobile Internet at least once, which amounts to over 34 million people domestically according to M:Metrics. The online survey showed over 1,000 mobile Internet users from across the United States a short explanation of how ScanLife works with potential applications for the technology. Participants were then asked to provide a measure of their interest in 2D code technology and to specifically identify the benefits and barriers to using the mobile Internet.
The results reveal that a large majority of users feel the current navigation process for accessing the mobile Internet can be challenging and time consuming, and ultimately limited their opportunity to discover new content and sites.
Additional notable results and trends from the survey include:
82 percent of participants felt ScanLife had a relevance to their
needs;
86 percent of respondents said they would tell their friends about this
technology;
86 percent confirmed that they would download the ScanLife application
to their phone to scan codes that were of interest to them;
82 percent of those surveyed felt ScanLife would make them more likely
to use the Internet on their cell phones, highlighting simplified
navigation as the primary benefit.
"This survey confirms a developing trend: that a definite market need exists for this technology and the ScanLife application fills this gap for consumers, connecting them to vital information in a matter of seconds," said Jonathan Bulkeley, Chief Executive Officer of Scanbuy. "After deploying ScanLife in a number of international markets, the initial reception from
end-users has been extremely positive, and these research results show that 2D barcode technology has huge potential for adoption in the U.S. market as well."
Research Now is a global firm that fields over 600 online projects per month offering technical excellence with industry leading programming and hosting capabilities. Prior to participating in the survey respondents were screened for specific criteria to determine their age, the function of a camera on their mobile phone and to assure that participants had accessed the Internet from their cell phone at least once prior to the study. Clear Ideas, which processed and analyzed the data, is a research consultancy group with offices in New York, London and Amsterdam offering strategy and innovation to research results.
ScanLife technology uses camera phones to connect the physical world to the digital world. Marketers and content providers can use Scanbuy's EZcodes, which are compatible with more handsets than any other 2D code, to extend brand engagement onto mobile devices. ScanLife gives users the most up-to-date information quickly and easily on their mobile device, at the time they are actively making decisions or looking for answers. It can be downloaded from the mobile browser on about 70 different handset models at www.getscanlife.com or by texting SCAN to 70734.
The ScanLife platform has been deployed in Spain, the Philippines, Denmark, the Greater China Region, Brazil and the United States. Several other markets are expected to launch throughout 2008.
