GSA Celebrates 10 years of Mobile Innovation and Global Growth

October 2, 2008 - The GSA (Global mobile Suppliers Association) today celebrates its first 10 years as the representative organisation for mobile suppliers worldwide.

GSA was established in 1998 by several leading manufacturers and initially acted as a champion to build the global footprint of GSM and its evolution as the platform for delivery of 3G services. At that time there were 100 million GSM subscriptions worldwide, with 3G and the promise of new data services round the corner. GSM subscriptions grew to 500 million by May 2001, and the first billion was announced in February 2004. The pace of growth continued to quicken; 2 billion subscriptions by June 2006, and 3 billion was reached in early 2008.

3G arrived in the market in 2001, and evolved High Speed Packet Access
(HSPA) systems are delivering new operator revenues and unprecedented data traffic growth. LTE systems will follow in the near future to continue the tradition of delivering even greater efficiencies, capacity, features and performance through evolution as the cornerstone for continuing growth, investment, and commercial success.

The mobile world has completely changed during these past 10 years. GSM has evolved from being a mobile voice solution for the European “Single Market” to a truly global communications service. An estimated 55% of the world’s population are served by mobile communications. The industry is now undergoing a change from its roots of “taking voice mobile” to “making Internet mobile”. Over 220 commercial HSPA networks deliver reliable and competitive mobile broadband services to millions of customers in 96 countries, satisfying the full range of consumer and enterprise communications needs. In many rural areas and emerging growth markets, mobile communications provide the first and often only experience of the telephone, and the Internet.

GSA activities and priorities have also evolved to ensure continuous delivery of accurate and timely information on market and technology aspects, well-researched statistics and facts, and trusted, impartial analysis to assist the industry and show how the market is developing. GSA issued over 250 press releases and other statements during the past decade. The GSA website www.gsacom.com is highly targeted towards industry players, stakeholders, decision-makers and opinion-formers. In the year to October 1, 2008 the GSA website was used by 54,000 people from 195 countries, and is experiencing strong growth. The continually expanding range of GSA surveys, Information Papers, statistics, and charts/maps, etc. are very popular, widely referenced and used, and generated 13,000 downloads in the last month alone.

Dialog and information sharing with network operators are very important. The GSA Mobile Broadband Forum held in Amsterdam in September provided excellent market insights from leading practitioners, and was the latest in over 30 workshops, seminars and briefings which have been organized worldwide by GSA for operators and member companies.

Alan Hadden, President, GSA said: “GSA will continue to focus on the mobile broadband, including for example, explaining the benefits which arise from deploying HSPA in lower frequency bands e.g. 900 MHz (UMTS900) or 850 MHz, with Information Papers, case studies and seminars. LTE is also a key topic, especially to show and explain strategies for operators how to incorporate LTE into their business. In addition, environmental aspects will be a major topic.”

“The First 10 Years of GSA” special website page celebrates this milestone, including testimonials and citations from leading industry organizations and individuals http://www.gsacom.com/10years.php4
