WirelessDevNet.com Press Release

New Severe Weather Alert Service Allows Subscribers to Help Protect Others

In 2008, 125 people were killed by tornadoes, making it the 10th deadliest year for related deaths. In preparation for the 2009 tornado season, WindSnitch.com today announces the launch of its new, subscription-based severe weather alert service. WindSnitch helps individuals, schools and communities prepare for approaching tornadoes by delivering targeted warnings by telephone, email and SMS text message 24 hours a day. Additionally, WindSnitch was specifically designed to allow individual subscribers to sponsor their community's schools for free and also offers free tornado alerts to communities that have been significantly impacted by severe weather or face an increased risk.

“WindSnitch was developed in direct response to our country’s growing tornado threat,” said Gregg Lewis, WindSnitch’s founder. “With these weather events, there is often little warning, so it is vitally important that people have a way to receive advance notice of approaching tornadoes—even if they are away from their televisions or sleeping and unable to hear tornado sirens. No one should rely on a single method of severe weather notification.”

Once subscribers register for WindSnitch’s affordable service (only $0.99/month) they are offered the opportunity to sponsor their community's schools. For no additional fee, they simply request that WindSnitch send free tornado alerts to a school of their choosing. Subscribers can select from a database of 70,000 schools or can provide contact information for schools not yet in WindSnitch’s system.

Additionally, WindSnitch provides free tornado alerts to deserving communities that have been significantly impacted by severe weather or face an increased risk. The first two deserving communities will be announced in the coming weeks. Residents from these cities will go through a separate registration process allowing for the delivery of free tornado alerts.

“Subscription fees should never be a reason for people to go unprotected from severe weather,” added Lewis. “Children should feel safe at school and those who have suffered loss due to severe weather need reassurance that, if there is a next time, they will have additional warning. We believe that our subscribers will embrace the opportunity to help us donate our service and make this a reality.”

WindSnitch relies on the National Weather Service’s latest capabilities to ensure that subscribers are only notified if a tornado is approaching the specific area they have selected to protect. The alerts should reach subscribers within 90 seconds of a tornado warning being issued.

About WindSnitch
