The Wireless Association® Statement on the Introduction of H.R. 5649

Washington - Upon introduction of legislation by Reps. Rick Boucher (D-VA) and Lamar Smith (R-TX) to provide a national framework for the taxation of digital goods and services, CTIA-The Wireless Association® President and CEO Steve Largent released the following statement:

"CTIA is pleased Congressmen Boucher and Smith recognize the importance of establishing a national framework to prevent multiple and discriminatory taxation of digital goods and services.  Enacting a federal tax framework makes sense, although we hope that any taxation of digital goods and services be implemented in a manner that is minimal.

"This bi-partisan legislation will provide tax administrators and consumers alike a better understanding of how digital commerce should be taxed.  That will enable digital commerce to continue to flourish in a way that will both assist in the nation's economic recovery and enhance American economic competitiveness.

"We look forward to working with the sponsors and Congress to enact the legislation as quickly as possible."
