Ekahau Celebrates 10 Years of Innovation in Wireless Location Technolog
Ekahau Inc., the worldwide leader in high performance Wi-Fi-based Real Time Location Systems (RTLS), today celebrated 10 years of delivering continued innovation in Wi-Fi-enabled real time location tracking technology. The company, which was founded in June 2000, is the only RTLS provider that can provide room-level accuracy to a wide variety of industries using only standards-based Wi-Fi networks and the advanced functionalities of the company’s tags.
“The pioneering work that Ekahau started 10 years ago has redefined the location-tracking market and resulted in RTLS becoming a mainstream solution that is critical to operations for a wide number of industries,” said Antti Korhonen, Ekahau’s president and CEO. “For the last three quarters, Ekahau’s RTLS business has grown on average more than 40 percent per quarter. Ekahau got its start as a spin-off designed to commercialize technology developed at Helsinki University. During the past 10 years, the company has achieved a number of firsts in the Wi-Fi-based RTLS market, including:
• 2002 – Launched industry’s first Wi-Fi-based commercial location engine, the Ekahau Positioning Engine (EPE).
• 2003 – Introduced Ekahau Site Survey, the industry’s first Wi-Fi coverage mapping and site survey tool.
• 2004 – Introduced industry’s first RTLS tag with Wi-Fi tracking capability, the T101 tag.
• 2006 – Introduced the second generation probabilistic location algorithm, which was the underlying technology for EPE 4.0.
• 2007 – Introduced the Ekahau T301BD personnel badge, with industry’s first two-way Wi-Fi text pager functionality.
• 2008 – Introduced full family of new RTLS tags, including industrial tags, temperature monitoring tags and intrinsically safe certified tags for hazardous environments.
• 2009 – Began supporting Wi-Fi RTLS micro-zone accuracy with the introduction of an infrared-based location beacon.
• 2010 – Shipping the industry’s first Wi-Fi based wristband RTLS tag
