ViewRanger Off-Road Satnav Helps Global Explorers Get Mobile

CAMBRDIGE, UK - Augmentra has mapped out the next stage in its goal to revolutionize the outdoor GPS market. Launched today, through major appstores, is a global version of its popular ViewRanger GPS ‘off-road sat nav’ application for Symbian mobile phones. Following shortly will be versions of ViewRanger GPS for iPhone and Android mobile platforms.

Craig Wareham, co-founder and CEO of Augmentra, leaders in mobile mapping and off-road navigation, said that he is delighted to see ViewRanger GPS hit the milestones in its next stage of development. Launches in the App stores of the three major OS platforms will occur during Spring 2010.

ViewRanger GPS offers far more than a map on a phone. It is a complete outdoor navigator with simple to use GPS interface, trail navigation, a sports computer to log progress, and the BuddyBeacon to locate friends. Routes can be plotted on the handset, imported via GPX, or downloaded over-the-air from ViewRanger’s growing library of guided routes.

ViewRanger has proven popular for all kinds of outdoor recreational activities – on land, on water and in the air.

However, it is not just hikers and bikers that have flocked to ViewRanger. The app has also found success with outdoor workers, expedition managers, and is relied on by search and rescue teams during emergency ‘shouts’.

Craig Wareham, co-founder and CEO of Augmentra said, “The advantages of using a smartphone for outdoor GPS navigation are many. It’s lightweight, has a great screen, and you can run ViewRanger alongside your favorite road navigation tool too. Unlike proprietary devices, your smartphone with ViewRanger is connected – enabling anytime access over-the-air to additional mapping and a rapidly growing library of informational content. ViewRanger combines mapping, outdoor navigation, and your favourite guidebook in one handy app.”

This latest release bundles global street and topographical mapping to build on the growing range of premium data sourced from national mapping agencies in over 13 territories. Premium partners include Ordnance Survey in the UK, National Geographic in the USA, and Bundesamt fur Kartographie und Geodsie (BKG) in Germany.

ViewRanger GPS is available now from www.viewranger.com and from Symbian apps stores including Nokia’s OVI store and Samsung Apps from £4.50 (€5). It will be released to the Apple App store and the Android Marketplace shortly. Users can register at www.viewranger.com to be the first to get ViewRanger on their iPhone and Android handsets.
