4G Americas Elects Entel to Board of Governors

4G Americas, a wireless industry trade association representing the 3GPP family of technologies, today announced that Entel has been approved to join the 4G Americas Board of Governors. Entel becomes a member of the board – currently comprised of 17 leading operators and manufacturers to work together to promote, facilitate and advocate for the deployment and adoption of HSPA and LTE mobile broadband technologies throughout the Americas. Entel, Empresa Nacional de Telecomunicaciones S.A., is the largest telecommunications company in Chile with CH$ 1,240,914 million in annual revenues reported in December 2011. The company provides mobile and wireline services (including Data & IT, Internet, local telephony, long distance and related services). Entel also has wireline and call center operations in Perú.

Chris Pearson, President of 4G Americas expressed the sentiments of the Board member companies, “4G Americas is very happy and honored in counting Entel as a new board member. As a technology leader with several important milestones for the 3GPP family of technologies in the region, Entel will be an asset to our board, and our mission to deploy advanced mobile broadband services in the Americas to transform the way we live, work and play.”

Among the milestones by Entel PCS are: the first operator to launch GSM in Latin America in 1998; the first operator in Latin America to trial LTE in 2009; and the first operator in Latin America to launch HSPA+ dual carrier at peak speeds of 42 Mbps in 2011.

Erasmo Rojas, Director of Latin America and the Caribbean at 4G Americas emphasized the importance of Entel becoming a Board member of the association. “Entel’s strength and leadership in fostering the progress the 3GPP family of technologies will notably enhance the work of our organization in advancing HSPA+ and LTE mobile broadband networks and services throughout Latin America.”

HSPA is the leading mobile broadband technology worldwide and offers operators the ability to meet the increasingly advanced wireless needs of customers while maximizing their existing network assets. There are currently 79 commercial HSPA deployments in 33 countries in Latin America and of those networks, 34 have been upgraded to HSPA+ in 21 countries. There are already 5 commercial LTE networks deployed in Latin America for mobile and fixed services.

“Entel is proud to join the leading wireless industry association in the Americas as a new Board of Governors member and looks forward to our participation within the work of 4G Americas,” stated Antonio Buchi, CEO of Entel.

Juan Carlos Jil, Director of Alliances and Innovation at Entel and board member representative at 4G Americas added, “As one of the technology and business innovators in Chile and the Latin American market, we plan to share our vision and experience by contributing the marketing and technology ideas that have made Entel one of the leading operators in the region.”
