Canadians Act to Ensure Competition in Wireless Marketplace and Benefit Consumers
Washington, DC – Yesterday, the Government of Canada announced that it will amend its Telecommunications Act to help telecom companies with a small market share access the capital they need to grow and compete. The Canadian government also will apply specific measures in its 700 MHz auction to see that rural citizens will have access to the same advanced services as their urban counterparts. RCA – The Competitive Carriers Association has several Canadian companies as affiliate members and is pleased to hear the Canadian government is diligently working to ensure competition in the telecommunications industry.
“I am pleased to see the Canadian government is taking major steps to ensure its citizens, no matter where they live, have access to the most advanced services,” said RCA president & CEO Steven K. Berry. “It appears that the Canadians have learned some valuable pro-competition lessons from U.S. missteps in rolling out 700 MHz services. Clearly the Canadians want to make sure new services and competition are goals of the auction process, and interoperability is a key factor.”
Berry continued, “In light of the FCC’s expressed concerns about a lack of interoperability in the lower 700 MHz spectrum, which will likely be reflected in a forthcoming NPRM, it is a positive sign to see the global community working to ensure competition. Policymakers should be doing everything they can to encourage innovation and competition, and I look forward to working further with the FCC to promote competitive policies such as interoperability and access to spectrum.”
