NEC Launches "New Last Mile" Turnkey and Managed Services
NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) today launched a pioneering "New Last Mile" one-stop-shop solution to help network operators deploy the next layer of LTE capacity and coverage in a rapid, economical and integrated way and keep pace with skyrocketing mobile broadband demand. It's designed to simplify the end-to-end process of delivering the LTE brand promise in complex 3D urban landscapes, VIP customer sites outside the current macro footprint and rural areas in line with their spectrum licensing obligations.
By working with NEC on discrete turnkey projects – or on a full managed service basis – operators can reduce the costs of dealing directly with multiple contractors and benefit from access to NEC's integrated approach which minimises site visits and helps to meet aggressive deployment schedules. This new business model leverages NEC's leadership in open, multivendor HetNet technology and the most comprehensive small cell and backhaul portfolio in the market.
NEC provides a portfolio of highly specialist consultancy and project management services, including RAN hotspot identification using social networking analytics, advice on efficient RAN sharing schema between multiple operators and non-line-of-sight backhaul network design in complex urban terrains. NEC's experts recommend, deploy and optimise the most appropriate microwave, millimeter wave or optical small cell and backhaul solution for each new site. Where dug fiber is not an option for cost, time or accessibility reasons, a wide range of point-to-point, point-to-multipoint, non-line-of-sight and near-line-of-sight backhaul wireless solutions are available to suit even the most challenging urban landscapes.
During the installation phase, NEC works to precision-tune antenna alignment, taking into account how the outdoor environment may change with foliage, signage, the movement of high vehicles and the propagation effects of extreme rain. NEC continues to optimise network performance to manage many types of data efficiently, including voice and ever rising volumes of video, throughout the maintenance cycle.
Operators can opt to use NEC's open HetNet platform which uses advanced interference reduction algorithms and Self-Organizing Network (SON) features to provide seamless mobile connectivity via any multi-vendor mix of macro and small cells. Using intelligent traffic and interference management techniques, it minimises network resource usage while delivering a consistently high Quality of Service (QoS). NEC is also pioneering velocity-sensitive LTE technology that alerts base stations over a broad area about mobile devices moving at high speed, but sets a narrower area for those which move slowly to reduce unnecessary network "chatter" and free up additional capacity.
"Deploying macro and small cell networks is simply not the same. With demand driven deployments, new planning techniques and literally hundreds of deployment variations, NEC has created its "New Last Mile" initiative which provides a new business model to help our customers overcome the economic and technical challenges of meeting their LTE brand promise," said Katsumi Tanoue, Assistant General Manager at NEC Corporation. "We take away the complexity by optimising the delivery model while creating a more open, standards-based, multi-vendor network."
