WirelessDevNet.com Press Release

Opower Expands Thermostat Platform to Support Multiple WiFi Thermostat Models

Opower, the global leader in cloud-based software for the utility industry, today announced the release of the next version of the Opower Thermostat Platform. The new version adds support for Honeywell’s Comfort Control API extending the platform to additional Honeywell WiFi thermostats, as well as a key new feature, Set for Savings, which incorporates recommendations based on actual energy and billing data to improve the energy saving potential of thermostats connected to the Opower platform.  Opower also announced that Direct Energy is the first competitive retail energy provider to deploy the solution at scale as part of their new smart thermostat initiative available to all residential customers in Texas. Opower’s thermostat platform runs on the latest iteration of the Opower platform, Opower 5, which will be released next month.

“As connected thermostats increase in popularity, there is a significant opportunity to integrate proactive advice based on energy and billing data into the customer experience,” said Alex Kinnier, Opower’s SVP of Product.  “Set for Savings is our latest feature to not only help customers become more efficient, but to make their overall experience significantly more enjoyable.”

The new platform release is designed to make it easier for retail energy providers and utilities to deploy a WiFi thermostat program as part of a direct load control program, an enhancement to an existing energy audit program, or as a standalone energy efficiency program.  New clients on the platform will be able to offer residential customers multiple proven thermostat options from Honeywell such as the WiFi VisionPRO, WiFi FocusPRO and WiFi Smart Thermostat.

The newest software feature, Set for Savings, will help users understand how small adjustments to their thermostat settings can maximize the savings impact on their monthly bill.  Additional new features include an enhanced customer service portal for utility and retail energy provider program managers and mobile optimized pairing tools for installation technicians.

Direct Energy is scheduled to deploy the Opower Thermostat Platform and Honeywell’s suite of WiFi thermostats to its residential customer base in Texas next month.  When the program becomes available, eligible residential customers will be able to select an energy plan bundled with the Opower platform, as well as a WiFi thermostat professionally installed by Direct Energy.

“Direct Energy’s connected home program gives our customers the ability to control and learn about their energy usage, through Opower’s leading software and Honeywell’s proven thermostats,” said Adam Miller, Direct Energy’s Senior Director, Innovation. “Direct Energy will match our expert home services network, which includes One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning, with Opower and Honeywell to bring together great customer experience, a high degree of reliability and a joint commitment to helping customers save money on their bills with a competitively priced energy plan.”
