AT&T Wireless Introduces San Diego to the Next Generation of Wireless Services -- 'Wireless
Valley' Receives High-Speed Wireless Data Services
Posted by WDN, April 18, 2002
In a city overwhelmed by promises of next-generation wireless
services, AT&T Wireless (NYSE: AWE) today delivers a bit of reality by offering customers "always-on" high-speed wireless data
services on its new GSM(TM)(Global Standard for Mobile Communications) /GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) network.
AT&T Wireless will provide San Diego customers with a variety of high-speed wireless data services, including the company's recently
announced mMode(SM) service. Customers can personalize mMode to gain access to information, people, news, games, and much
more, using any AT&T Wireless GSM/GPRS phone.
"While others promise, we continue to deliver. People want to receive the benefits of advanced wireless services now," said Mohan
Gyani, president of AT&T Wireless' Mobility Division. "We expect San Diego, a city with an appetite for technology, to quickly
embrace the benefits of these new services."
San Diego customers selecting voice and high-speed data services on the company's GSM/GPRS network can choose from the
following wireless phones:
-- Sony Ericsson T68 ($199.99) - the first GSM/GPRS phone in the
United States to feature a color screen and Bluetooth(TM) wireless
technology.
-- Nokia 8390 ($199.99) - a new GSM/GPRS phone with changeable fashion
covers, voice dialing and a personal memo recorder.
-- Motorola Timeport(TM) Model P7382I ($79.99) - a GSM/GPRS wireless phone
that provides customers with voice dialing and personal memo recorder.
-- Siemens S46 ($199.99) - (available in stores next week) is the
world's first multi-band GSM/GPRS/TDMA designed for the international
traveler.
Customers can also use AT&T Wireless Mobile Connection and a Novatel modem to wirelessly enable their laptops or Compaq iPAQ
Pocket PCs.
Depending on the device used, customers can receive data speeds on the order of 25-30Kbps for phones and 35-40Kbps for PDAs
and laptops equipped with wireless modems. Additionally, when data compression service is turned on, the perceived speed of common
Internet applications running on PDAs and laptops could nearly triple.
Service is available in more than 25 of the top 100 markets, including Chicago, Dallas, Las Vegas, Miami, Phoenix, Portland and Seattle.
The AT&T Wireless GSM/GPRS network is deployed across nearly 50 percent of the company's served population. The company
plans to extend the network to cover its remaining markets by the end of the year.
GSM is the most widely used wireless voice technology in the world. Carriers using GSM serve more than 70 percent of wireless voice
customers worldwide. Additionally, GPRS is being adopted by wireless carriers worldwide to provide high-speed data services.
