The Sports Network Announces `Sports Anywhere' SMS Service in Concert
With Mobile Telemedia
Posted by WDN, August 15, 2002
HATBORO, Pa., Aug 15, 2002 - The Sports Network has recently announced its
expansion into the wireless world of communicative content through an agreement with Mobile Telemedia, Inc., one of the
world's leading technological organizations dedicated to wireless advancements, focusing on the dissemination of content
worldwide. The thrust of Sports Anywhere, the service being introduced, will be SMS messaging to phones, pagers and
e-mail with subscribers receiving the sought after data in real time fashion.
"When 976, and then 900, services via the phone were in vogue nearly two decades ago," indicated Ken Zajac, Director
of Sales for The Sports Network, "everyone beat a path to his or her phone to hear sports results, horoscopes each day,
news, financial updates and even jokes. Along came the Internet, the phone as a purposeful tool for receipt of information
receded into the background and revival seemed very distant. However," he continued, "with the advent of the cell phone,
wireless technology, pagers, PDAs, the phone is back in business and the `communications weapon of the future.'
"It is difficult to envision anyone in the business world without a cell phone today, a teenager not pressing one, often two,
to his ears, paying for specific ring tones of their favorite recording artists or a sports fan not longing for instant news and
updates when away from the computer of the office or home.
"As the premiere provider of real time sports in the nation, it seemed only natural that we should take our own technology
and merge it with that of an organization like Mobile Telemedia to bring our vast array of data to cell phones everywhere,
and anywhere. That has given rise to Sports Anywhere. Now the sports fan can have messages forwarded about his
favorite teams in the baseball, basketball, football, hockey - college as well as professional, in addition to golf, tennis, auto
racing, Canadian Football League, Division IAA schools and very much more. All a subscriber need is pick and choose,
daily or more often, the nature of the messages he wishes to receive."
It was pointed out by The Sports Network that, in addition to league or particular sports news, other categories include,
but are not limited to, odds, weather, standings, starting times of all games, updates during the game, at each score,
quarterly, by the inning, period, or sooner than that. The choices are multiple and intended to suit every subscriber's needs.
"Besides sports," Mr. Zajac continued, "we will also provide our subscribers with 5-day weather listings in cities across the
country, stock updates, financial and entertainment news. Stock information can be tailored to time of day, increases or
decreases by percentage or dollar/cents amount. Quotes are accompanied by any news available that day on the company
about whom the inquiry has been made.
"Sports Anywhere can be ordered from our own Internet site, www.sportsnetwork.com, or through
www.sportsanywhere.com and will soon be available on hundreds of newspaper, and other sites, for whom we brand
content throughout the day."
Subscription pricing for Sports Anywhere is $7.95 per month for only sports and $9.95 monthly for the package of
information that includes weather, financial and entertainment news. The Sports Network indicated that there may well be
a brief advertising message or other promotional statement appended to the content which newspapers, radio and TV
stations can use for disseminating a short message of potential interest to their audience - e.g., contest news, special
promotions, highlighted focus of the day, etc.
"This," concluded Mr. Zajac, "is assuredly the wave of the future and, as in the past, it is our intention to be on the cutting
edge of the technology. To accomplish that in the most efficient way possible we have allied with a company, Mobile
Telemedia, whose credentials and expertise are unrivaled."
