PINPOINT'S FUEL DEVELOPER PROGRAM
DEMONSTRATES RAPID GROWTH AND APPLICATION DIVERSITY
Posted by WDN, December 11, 2001
Pinpoint Offers Carrier Customers Over 150 Wireless Apps From Growing Developer Program
Cary, N.C. - December 11, 2001 - Pinpoint Networks, Inc., a leading provider of mobile
infrastructure software and applications to wireless carriers, today announced rapid growth in
overall Fuel Developer Program membership. Since its launch just a few months ago in August,
Pinpoint's Developer Program has grown to over 150 applications from more than 75 members,
representing a variety of applications and content from 15 categories, including games and
entertainment, travel, commerce, enterprise, and communication.
Pinpoint's Fuel Developer Program (FDP) is a set of services and technology that provides
member application developers and content providers with distribution, monetization, and
support for their wireless applications. The FDP was created to compliment Pinpoint's Fuel
Mobile Applications Platform, software that enables mobile operators and wireless service
providers with the ability to quickly scale their mobile content offerings (and applications) and
offer premium mobile services that generate per-use and subscription-based revenues.
Among the growing list of FDP members is Switchboard Nearbuy (SM), a leading provider of
next generation directory services that help people and businesses find each other. Their
Nearbuy Merchandising application helps mobile users search local businesses by product
description, brand or model number; confirm availability of a specific product at a specific
retailer location; receive interactive driving directions; and connect directly with the retailer.
Switchboard Nearbuy also provides general directory services that include yellow pages, number
look-up, travel information, and street addresses of friends, colleagues, and businesses.
"Pinpoint's Fuel Developer Program delivers value to Switchboard Nearbuy by improving our
distribution for free applications and enabling us to generate revenue with premium
applications," said Rich Beckmann, vice president of syndication at Switchboard Nearbuy. "The
Fuel Developer Program has quickly provided us increased distribution, marketing, and technical
support, and the program facilitates our ability to drive revenue from our wireless applications."
Recent additions to the Fuel Developer Program include the following travel, entertainment,
weather, portal, and location-based application and content providers:
Custom Weather
Galileo International
go2 Systems
TicketMaster/CitySearch
Vindigo
Pinpoint's FDP provides mobile operators and wireless service providers with a competitive
advantage by offering a variety of best-of-breed applications that they can distribute to their
subscribers, generating new subscriber interest and increasing revenue opportunities for both the
carrier and application developer. Pinpoint continues to partner with leading application
developers to increase the number of available premium applications for operator customers and
to sustain its aggressive growth strategy.
"Mobile Internet subscribers are demanding more compelling and useful applications, and
application and content providers are clamoring for increased distribution and the ability to
monetize their services with wireless carriers," said Jud Bowman, president and CEO of
Pinpoint. "We are excited about the rapid growth we are experiencing in our Fuel Developer
Program, which provides clear validation for our Mobile Applications Platform in the developer
community and enables us to provide our carrier customers and their subscribers with some of
the best wireless content and applications available."
Participation
Developers interested in joining the Fuel Developer Program should visit the Developers section
of Pinpoint's website (http://www.pinpoint.com/developers/registration.html). Pinpoint offers
two levels of membership to appeal to application developers and content providers that are at
different stages of application development.
Joining the program enables developers to easily distribute applications to mobile subscribers,
which is critical for building an audience for wireless applications and driving revenue. Pinpoint
provides the critical link between developers and subscribers by distributing applications to
millions of mobile users through its Mobile Applications Platform currently deployed by a
growing network of wireless service providers, including Verizon Wireless, Terra Lycos (a
subsidiary of Telefónica), and Rogers AT&T Wireless.
Mobile Applications Platform
Pinpoint's Mobile Applications Platform, Fuel, enables mobile operators and wireless service
providers with the ability to scale their mobile content offerings and applications as well as to
implement content-based billing for premium mobile services on a per-use and subscription
basis. This usage-based revenue model provides the ability for end users to select and pay for
the applications that are most useful to them, and then facilitates revenue sharing between the
carrier and the application developers.
