  • Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC Helps EMS Team Prepare for Disaster Response at Super Bowl XXXVI

Posted by WDN, Feb. 05, 2002

Thanks to the Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC -- a handheld computer smaller than the kicking tee used to start Sunday's Super Bowl game -- emergency response teams had a smoother time dealing with potential disasters.

The iPAQ Pocket PC from Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) helped a crew of emergency response technicians from Priority EMS, Inc. carry emergency procedure guidelines and manuals stored on the tiny devices throughout Super Bowl weekend to help them respond quicker to emergency situations.

Based in New Orleans, Louisiana, Priority EMS is an Accredited Advanced Life Support patient care provider offering emergency and non-emergency transport for patients throughout Louisiana, the U.S. and Central America by ground, and fixed wing ambulance, 24 hours a day.

"The iPAQ Pocket PC is an excellent platform for field use -- training time is minimal, it can hold all of our information with a lot of room to spare, it's very compact and inexpensive, yet it has tremendous processing power," said Michael Boatright, CEO of Priority EMS. "The screen is excellent and our Paramedics can read their information easily in any lighting condition, plus the iPAQ Pocket PC is easy to integrate with other platforms. A feature we really like is the way you can navigate using the button system."

Priority EMS loaded the iPAQ Pocket PCs with quick tips for diverting and controlling on-scene disasters, mapping information for the Super Dome and its perimeter, specific layout information on exit and evacuation routes, and complete disaster and emergency plans specific for the venue. In addition, the iPAQ Pocket PCs contained information on where crews were posted at specific times, plus a list and description of all of the assisting agencies, their locations and functions, and coordinated responsibilities.
