FCC Approval Clears Way for XtremeSpectrum to Deliver Industry's First Commercial Ultra-wideband Solution;
Company Lauds FCC Ruling As Providing 'Win-Win' Solution For All
Posted by WDN, Feb. 14, 2002
XtremeSpectrum Inc., a privately held company dedicated to bringing ultra-wideband products to the
wireless industry, today commended the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for its adoption of final rules approving ultra-wideband technology for
commercial use. The FCC, following a more than three year review of safety and interference issues associated with the unlicensed operation of ultra-wideband,
today issued a final Report and Order for ultra-wideband, clearing the way for commercial deployment of the technology while protecting incumbent spectrum
users. Based on initial review of the FCC's rules, XtremeSpectrum will now focus its manufacturing and marketing efforts on delivering the industry's first
commercial ultra-wideband-based systems solution for wireless connectivity. Ultra-wideband has shown to be extremely cost-effective and efficient for indoor
wireless communications applications, such as camcorders, digital cameras, DVDs, digital video recorders, televisions, etc.
"We are extremely pleased with today's ruling by the FCC and believe that the FCC's approval of ultra-wideband for unlicensed operation represents a 'win-win'
solution, simultaneously protecting incumbent spectrum users and enabling the commercial consumer market to realize the full benefits of this revolutionary
technology," said Dr. Martin Rofheart, president and CEO of XtremeSpectrum. "Ultra-wideband will open up the wireless communications market to many
possibilities. Now, with FCC approval, consumer electronic companies will have access to a technology that can concurrently deliver high data rates at low costs
and low levels of power consumption. Current wireless technologies, such as Bluetooth and IEEE 802.11a/b/g," he continued, "require a compromise of these
three parameters and have limited broad consumer adoption of wireless connectivity within the home. XtremeSpectrum can now deliver the industry's first
ultra-wideband product over the next few months, which will result in many multimedia-centric consumer applications being realized by the end of 2003."
Ultra-wideband Approval
The FCC, working together with the Department of Commerce (DoC) and the National Telecommunications Information Administration (NTIA), compiled a
technically detailed and comprehensive record spanning over three and half years and 900 public filings, with particular focus on the safety and interference issues
associated with the unlicensed operation of ultra-wideband. XtremeSpectrum, working closely with the FCC, NTIA, DoC, Department of Transportation and
Department of Defense, had been joined by leading consumer electronics, semiconductor and communication equipment companies, such as Cisco, Intel,
Motorola, Sony Electronics, Sharp, Siemens and Texas Instruments, in filing letters of industry support for ultra-wideband with the FCC.

About XtremeSpectrum's Ultra-wideband Technology
Ultra-wideband is a wireless technology that transmits an extremely low power signal over a wide swath of radio spectrum. Unlike conventional radio systems that
operate within a relatively narrow bandwidth, i.e. Bluetooth, IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11a, ultra-wideband operates across a wide range of frequency spectrum
by transmitting a series of very narrow and low power pulses. The combination of broader spectrum, lower power and pulsed data means that ultra-wideband
causes less interference than conventional narrowband radio solutions, and delivers wire-like performance in an indoor wireless environment. This makes
ultra-wideband technology ideal for consumer electronics applications such as camcorders, laptops, DVDs, digital cameras, etc.
About XtremeSpectrum
Founded in 1998, XtremeSpectrum Inc. is a wireless communications company developing system semiconductor solutions for the multimedia connectivity
industry. Leveraging its unique understanding of ultra-wideband, XtremeSpectrum's patent-pending, ultra-wideband digital radio will allow multimedia-enabled
devices, such as phones, set-top boxes, laptops, DVDs, video recorders and PDAs, to send and receive multiple streams of digital video, audio and data
wirelessly, all at extremely low price points and power consumption levels -- levels that cannot be reached by existing solutions. XtremeSpectrum will focus on
customers in the OEM consumer electronic, OEM PC, PC-peripheral manufacturing, and wireless networking ODM/OEM spaces. For more information about
