  • Blogging goes mobile!

    by Glenn Letham (editor@wirelessdevnet.com), Feb. 25, 2003

Blogging goes mobile, enter "moblogging" aka. mobile-blogging - Not familiar with the term? Let me offer a short primer. Blogging is a simple and convenient method of pushing content to a website. It's a very convenient method of quickly updating any website with frequent updates and is well suited for personal or "news" oriented sites that get arrange/sort content by date. Generally, users access their blogs by logging into a secure site via a web browser. Content is uploaded using the blog service and the website is formatted and updated with the new content. Blogging becomes even more useful when multiple users have write access to a blog, facilitating a nifty way to build a community or shared site. Recently, Google even got into the blogging arena by purchasing popular blog site Blogger (see bloger.com) - no surprise since estimates show that some 500,000 active blogs are in existance today.

Mobile users and wireless developers will be pleased to learn that blogging has now gone mobile. For those half a million bloggers out there this means that you can now update your blog or weblog using a mobile device.

NewBay Software, developers of the world’s first mobile phone blogging system, recently launched “Go FoneBlog” a mobile operator trial system for its FoneBlog™ software.

The trial system will make it easy for mobile operators to evaluate FoneBlog by having a private, online system that can be used by the operator’s employees. The trial system is provided and hosted by Newbay Software and requires no setup by the mobile operator.

“The best way to understand the addiction of FoneBlog is to actually use it.” said David Sinnott, vice president of business development for NewBay Software. “There are numerous people involved with the decision to launch FoneBlog, so we created a simple, private trial system for each mobile operator who wishes to quickly move towards offering phone blogging for its customers.”

Since its launch in January 2003, FoneBlog has generated enormous interest from mobile operators. The trial system will enable operators learn about the technical and business elements to FoneBlog and let mobile operator personnel see the addictive nature of phone personal publishing and how this creates new revenue and marketing opportunities.

According to NewBay Software, the first commercial FoneBlog service will be launched by a European mobile operator in March and further rollouts are planned for later in 2003.
