LA Times Interactive Launches Wireless Versions of LATIMES.com and
Recycler.com
Posted by WDN, June 01, 2001
Now you can read a highly personalized edition of the Los Angeles Times anytime,
anywhere using your Palm VII or other wireless personal digital assistant, as well as
any Web-enabled phone.
Los Angles Times Interactive released
two wireless applications today, including the complete editorial content of
latimes.com and the entire classified advertising inventory of Recycler.com.
Both applications feature a unique personalization technology created by
AdaptiveInfo, Inc. that identifies relevant content based on what information
users have selected in the past.
The latimes.com and Recycler.com wireless applications are now accessible to
all Web- enabled phones, PocketPCs and RIM Pagers from
http://go.latimes.com and http://go.recycler.com. Palm users with wireless
access can download the PQA application at
http://www.latimes.com/wireless,
http://www.recycler.com/wireless and several Palm software resources on the
Web.
Latimes.com
The latimes.com application includes all content from The Times' Web site,
including local, national and international news updated throughout the day,
and other popular features such as entertainment, sports, travel, business,
weather, lottery results and horoscopes. Each user’s edition of The Times is
adaptively personalized based on what stories have been selected in the past.
Content can be searched by keywords and the full text of articles can be
forwarded by e-mail.
Recycler.com To Go
The Recycler.com To Go application is the first classified wireless system of its
kind, automatically recognizing user preferences and bringing the most relevant
items to prominence based on past selections. Mobile users can search the
entire inventory of over 100,000 automotive, real estate and general
merchandise ads offered in the Recycler Classifieds newspaper and on its Web
site. Users can respond by calling an advertiser or saving ads for access at a
later date.
“Today marks an important step in our strategy to make the content of the Los
Angeles Times and our partners available across a variety of digital media
platforms,” said Steve Barth, general manager of Los Angeles Times
Interactive. “It is especially rewarding to see an emerging technology being
used to bring so many benefits to consumers and advertisers at the same
time.”
Los Angeles Times Interactive/2-2-2-2
“The enormous size of our advertising inventory and the functionality we
introduce in this new distribution channel make Recycler.com To Go the most
powerful classified wireless venture of its kind,” said Kevin Klein, general
manager of Recycler.com. “These advantages will allow us to monetize the
program quickly by offering advertisers the ability to narrowly target messages
to prospective customers in their immediate area.”
The wireless features of latimes.com and Recycler.com To Go are as powerful
for advertisers as they are for consumers, allowing targeting by keywords, user
interests and geographic locations. Miller Infiniti of Van Nuys has signed on as
the first advertiser to purchase keyword inventory on the Recycler.com To Go
service. Because Recycler.com maintains the inventory of many automotive
advertisers, the system provides users with real-time information about what
cars are in stock at a nearby dealer location.
Los Angeles Times Interactive partnered with AdaptiveInfo, Inc. to create the
new wireless applications, which feature its powerful adaptive personalization
technology. The company’s Adaptive Classified Server and Adaptive Info Server
dynamically create a model of each user, prioritizing content based on the
preferences of each individual identified by their usage patterns.
“Our partnership with Los Angeles Times Interactive showcases the consumer
benefits of wireless and what’s possible when you combine first rate content
with the powerful features of our adaptive personalization technology,” said
Michael Pazzani, CEO of AdaptiveInfo.
Los Angeles Times Interactive is part of Tribune Interactive, Inc., a subsidiary
