SUCCESSFULL DEMONSTRATION OF LOCATION-BASED WIRELESS
SERVICES AT NBA FINALS
Posted by WDN, June 25, 2001
Icewrx Inc. Announces Successful Test Of Its Wireless Location-Based
Solution At STAPLES Center
Los Angeles, June 22, 2001 - Icewrx today announced it has successfully implemented a
wireless solution at the Staples center with Compaq Computers, Xircom, an Intel Company and
Macromedia to provide wireless connectivity to STAPLES Center, a world-class sports and
entertainment events venue in downtown Los Angeles.
During the NBA finals at STAPLES Center, Icewrx demonstrated for the first time on a wireless
handheld device, the functionality of delivering rich media content, live video action and relevant
information based on a persons physical location.
Through Icewrx’s vision, users will soon have a richer entertainment experience at STAPLES
Center. Patrons will have the ability to wirelessly view streaming video, the latest scores, team
statistics, check traffic conditions for the ride home, and eventually order food, drinks,
concessions, in addition to sending and receiving e-mail.
The HIVE™ solution provides wireless content, transaction, communication and entertainment
services to venues.
“This is a significant milestone for the development of wireless solutions, and the ability for people
to receive rich relevant information based on their physical location, “ said Michael Kahn,
president and CEO of Icewrx.
“We believe that this power of giving people relevant content, when and where they need it, is the
future of the information age and will change the way we work and live.
“While the Icewrx solution will support any wireless protocol, the implementation at STAPLES
Center uses 802.11b technology,” Kahn said. “We chose this technology for a number of reasons:
it is more mature than other protocols, it is powerful, proven and it works. With Compaq
Computers as one of our partners, we are able to build solutions which are readily deployable,
scalable and repeatable for many varied applications, whether venue or business based”.
Joseph Mizrachi, CTO of Icewrx, said, “This technology is so exciting for the simple reason that it
allows people to access massive amounts of locally relevant information through the convenience
of handheld devices”.
Icewrx’s solution is an inexpensive approach to wirelessly enable a venue’s existing information
assets. Icewrx provides a complete package of services enabling organizations to provide
wireless network access to handheld devices.
Icewrx is negotiating with other leading venues, retail organizations and hotel operations to
implement the wireless solution.
