  • OmniSky Selects BlueKite to Enhance Access of Web Content On Mobile Devices

Posted by WDN, June 27, 2001

OmniSky will use BlueKite's technology platform to significantly increase speeds for wirelessly accessing Web-based information on laptop computers.
OmniSky Corporation (Nasdaq:OMNY), a leading global provider of award-winning wireless applications and services, today announced the selection of BlueKite, a leading mobile Internet software provider, to optimize access of Web content on mobile devices. OmniSky will use BlueKite's technology platform to significantly increase speeds for wirelessly accessing Web-based information on laptop computers. The BlueKite software platform optimizes the Web-browsing experience on mobile devices through caching and compression algorithms that reduce unnecessary data transmissions over wireless networks. The agreement between the two companies allows OmniSky to extend BlueKite's optimization technology to other devices in the future.

"With the BlueKite technology, OmniSky can optimize speeds for accessing Web content over wireless networks," said Jorge Pont, OmniSky's director of product marketing. "OmniSky selected BlueKite because of its proven technology and global experience. The BlueKite platform helps OmniSky provide a better user experience for wirelessly accessing Web-based information on laptops and potentially on Pocket PC devices."

OmniSky offers a broad range of wireless personal and corporate e-mail and Internet services in the U.S. and Europe. Most recently, OmniSky and Hewlett-Packard Company announced a plan to offer wireless e-mail and Internet access to HP Pavilion notebook PCs. OmniSky's Wireless Access solution will enable Pavilion users to use the same e-mail and Web browser applications for mobile Internet access as they use for wired Internet access.

"OmniSky and Hewlett-Packard are clear leaders in offering innovative products and services. Utilizing the OmniSky service with BlueKite technology, HP Pavilion notebook PCs can be transformed into compelling mobile Internet devices that meet users' high expectations," said Robin Abrams, BlueKite's president and chief executive officer.

OmniSky plans to begin offering its wireless access solution for HP Pavilion notebook PC this summer. Pricing for the service will be announced at that time.
