Re: Where's the Revenue in LBS?... Report finds LBS to Generate Millions, Not Billions of Dollars

It's true that the market for LBS grows not as fast as expected earlier. One of the major problems is the small penetration of GPS enabled subscribers which will make up only 14% and 26% of the total wireless subscriber base during 2003 and 2004. As people see, the GPS enabled cellular phones are still rare and even those GPS enabled cellular phones do not directly provide geographic coordinates to the cellular phone holders because these coordinates such as longitude/latitude are meaningless to consumers. Therefore, cellular phone manufacturers like Nokia are reluctant to add GPS chips onto their cellular phones that makes the LBS grows even slower.

To accelerate the growth of LBS, an important thing is to turn the meaningless geographic coordinates into meaningful information that consumers can directly make use of. NAC Geographic Products Inc. has developed a new technology called the Natural Area Coding System that generates highly efficient Universal Addresses of only eight or ten alphanumeric characters to unify geographic coordinates, addresses, postal codes and area codes for the entire world. The Universal Addresses can be displayed on all GPS receivers, pinpointed on all maps and used as postal codes to sort all mail automatically.

Able to display Universal Addresses, GPS receivers including GPS cellular phones will become much more useful to consumers. They can use the displayed Universal Address to navigate to any location with Universal Address by simply comparing the two Universal Addresses. They can use the Universal Address to record the exact locations of any important events, accidents and discoveries. People may ask how we can obtain Universal Addresses of various destinations. The solution is quite simple. Look up the Universal Addresses from any telephone books geocoded with Universal Addresses where you can find all the Universal Addresses of companies and residents. Geocoding telephone catalogs with Universal Addresses now is an easy work that can be completed with a few days. Moreover, with the Universal Addresses available on phone books that are distributed to every house, the Universal Addresses will also quickly appear on business cards and advertisements because they can help people find the locations quickly.

With Universal Addresses, all LBS will be significantly simplified. Instead of typing traditional language dependent addresses, people can use an eight alphanumerical character Universal Address to specify any destination to save more than 80% of input keys and eliminate all the difficulties in inputting foreign characters. This is especially important for Europe where a few hour driving may cross many countries with different languages. Universal Addresses may become the only choice to streamline the interface for all location based services for a multiple language area.

The Natural Area Coding System will make LBS grow much faster and generate billions of dollars much sooner.
