  • TI OMAP
  • TI Unveils Independent OMAP Technology Centers in Asia

Posted by WDN, March 14, 2002

The head of Texas Instruments Incorporated's (NYSE:TXN) (TI) wireless business, and more than 150 top executives and developers from leading software development firms and wireless device manufacturers in India gathered together today to discuss the future of 2.5G and 3G mobile communications at the TI OMAP Technology Summit in Bangalore.

Gilles Delfassy, TI senior vice president and general manager of TI's wireless terminals business unit delivered the keynote at today's event, highlighting TI's commitment to the technology market in India and the key role India will play in the growth of wireless technology, both in and outside of the nation's borders.

"Today we're looking at the future of wireless communications and the role that TI and India can together play in this market," Delfassy said. "With its large and highly skilled technical population, India has the opportunity to play a major role in developing 2.5G and 3G applications. TI has worked with companies in India for more than 17 years to bring innovative technology to mobile devices worldwide, and will continue to further expand research, design and development of advanced digital and analog wireless semiconductor technology in India as we move ahead."

During the summit, Indian-based design engineers, software application developers and electronics company managers met with TI to discuss requirements of 2.5G and 3G mobile devices and how the OMAP processors and supporting OMAP Developer Network can accelerate their entry in the 2.5G and 3G market.

To facilitate the OMAP technology-based development activities of local companies, TI announced that it is expanding its worldwide network of independent OMAP Technology Centers, by selecting Wipro Technologies, the global IT services division of Wipro Limited, and Sasken Communication Technologies Limited, a leading provider of telecommunications software solutions and services, to serve as new OMAP Technology Centers in Asia.

By working with TI, Wipro Technologies and Sasken will help bolster development support for wireless handset manufacturers who use TI's OMAP application processors and modem technology for 2.5G and 3G mobile phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and mobile Internet appliances. In addition, the new centers will enable leading application software developers in India and other countries to quickly create multimedia-rich wireless applications that take advantage of the OMAP platform.
