800 Make The Trek to BREW Developer Conference
...BREW SDK Now Available for Download
Posted by WDN, May 17, 2001
At last week's innaugural BREW Developer Conference in San Diego, QUALCOMM provided a detailed technical
overview of the BREW architecture and training sessions on how to create wireless applications using the SDK.
The SDK was pitched to a sold out audience of some 800 application developers and industry professionals. The SDK includes Windows(R)-based tools that allow developers to create and test applications in a standard
development environment.
"With the commercial release of the SDK, developers worldwide can begin writing applications for
the BREW platform, taking us one step closer to the release of BREW-enabled commercial services
later this year," said Peggy Johnson, senior vice president of QUALCOMM and general manager of
QUALCOMM Internet Services. "QUALCOMM is excited to bring opportunities that the BREW
platform offers to wireless application developers. During the conference, we received overwhelmingly
positive feedback from the developers in attendance."

More From BREW Developer Conference
QUALCOMM attracted more than 800 wireless application developers, device manufacturers, carriers
and other wireless industry professionals from around the world to its inaugural "BREW 2001:
Developer and 3G Technology Conference," May 8-10, 2001. The commercial release of the BREW
Software Development Kit (SDK(TM)) took place at the conference.
Conference attendees took part in general and breakout sessions and explored wireless application development opportunities enabled by QUALCOMM's new Binary Runtime Environment
for Wireless(TM) (BREW(TM)) platform and third-generation (3G) CDMA wireless technology.
Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, QUALCOMM executive vice president, opened the conference by providing
attendees a look at the opportunities that the BREW platform, a very thin applications environment for
wireless devices, is bringing to the wireless market and to the end user. The BREW platform provides
applications developers with an open, standard platform upon which to develop their products.
"By providing a unified platform to develop, download and execute wireless data applications, the
BREW platform enables a broad range of compelling, useful new software and services, and opens
the door to a global market of hundreds of millions of subscribers," said Jacobs.
When focusing on benefits to consumers, Jacobs commented that the killer application has already
been created. "The killer app. is BREW's ability to download applications," Jacobs said.
Second-day general session speeches included: "BREWing the Wireless Telecosm," by renowned
technology writer and futurist George Gilder; "The Technology and Economic Importance of a
State-of-the-Art Wireless Device Platform," by Philippe Kahn, founder, chairman and CEO of
LightSurf Inc.; and "Chipsets for a Multimode World," by Tony Thornley, QUALCOMM executive
vice president and chief financial officer. Panel discussions with developers and wireless carriers
covered, "Writing BREW Applications for 3G Services" and "Expanding Markets: Wireless Data
Trends and the Need for Client and Client/Service Applications."
Presentations at the show included:
- A Powerful New Platform for Wireless Data Applications
- Writing BREW Applications for 3G Services
- Winning the Gen Y Appeal
- 3G CDMA
- Monetization Options & Payment Cycles
- The Economics Driving the Wireless Internet
- The Technology & Economic Importance of a State-of-the-Art Wireless Device Platform
