Radiolinja to Launch Springtoys' RBGT Ice Hockey Game
An SMS game to measure out one's scoring skills: take a shot against the
best goalies
Posted by WDN, November 12, 2001
(Helsinki, Finland, November 12, 2001) -- Springtoys, a leading creator and
enabler of mobile entertainment and game technology, delivers its SMS-based
penalty shoot-out game to Radiolinja, the second largest mobile operator in
Finland. According to the agreement, the virtual hockey rink will be opened
to players in Radiolinja's popular DJ Esko game arcade in November.
The launched game, "Rankkari", provides the player with an opportunity to
either challenge a friend or play against the goalies of the Finnish
national league. The interactive SMS game is complemented with a game board,
which helps the player in aiming the shots. The game board can be printed
from the special "Rankkari" site on the Internet, where one can also view
the scoreboard, updated in real time.
The game works by sending and receiving text messages on the mobile phone:
the player sends commands to a number given on the game board and receives
instructions and information on the progress of the game right back to the
phone. The players who achieve the best scores get their names displayed on
a Top 20 high score list on the Internet. Furthermore, each month, the best
player will win a special prize.
"The game is extremely creative and challenging, which makes it attractive
to play. Moreover, competing against friends for a place in the high score
list adds to the fun. I have no doubt that the game will be among the most
successful wireless games in Finland. Radiolinja will continue offering a
very attractive range of wireless services, including stimulating games and
entertainment", says Timo Ahmakari, Product Manager of Radiolinja.
The "Rankkari" game delivered to Radiolinja is one of Springtoys' RBGT
(Remote Board Game) sports games, which are already included in the mobile
entertainment offering of several mobile operators around the world. RBGT is
a unique combination of a traditional board game and a mobile phone, and the
National Board of Patents and Registration of Finland has granted Springtoys
a utility model protection for the concept. In addition, Springtoys has
filed for international patent protection. At the moment, Springtoys' RBGT
product family includes six interactive sports games: Virtual SwingT, Mobile
FormulaT, Grueling RallyeT, Penalty-LineT, Slam 'n' MatchT and Celebrity
Face OffT.
"It has been fantastic to discover the interest and demand for RBGT sports
games among mobile operators and service providers. The co-operation with
Radiolinja, a company that emphasizes advanced value-adding services, is a
great opportunity for us to reach the Finnish heavy gamers. I believe that
the co-operation will continue in the form of new innovative game concepts,"
says Janne Turunen, CEO of Springtoys.
