  • Metrowerks Provides Advanced Java Tools for PDAs; CodeWarrior Wireless Studio, PDA Edition, Includes On-Device Debugging Support

AUSTIN, Texas, Nov 25, 2002 - Mobile Java(tm) application developers are empowered to create professional applications for PDAs with Metrowerks' CodeWarrior(tm) Wireless Studio 7, PDA Edition.

The newest addition to Metrowerks' tools for wireless application development provides extensive support for building PersonalJava(tm) applications for a variety of handheld devices, including the Sharp Zaurus, Pocket PC handhelds such as the iPAQ family from Hewlett-Packard, or other PersonalJava devices such as the Sony Ericsson P800 Symbian phone.

CodeWarrior Wireless Studio 7, PDA Edition, provides developers with a debugging-enabled version of the Insignia (Nasdaq:INSG) PersonalJava Virtual Machine, along with Metrowerks' proprietary launch/debug agent and world-class debugger. The toolset is designed to enable customers to test and debug applications directly on the device, helping produce more stable applications, reduce time-to-market and lower support costs for development organizations.

The toolset includes Sun Microsystems' PersonalJava Emulation Environment(tm), advanced code completion and a visual Rapid Application Development (RAD) tool that can be used to drag-and-drop Abstract Windowing Toolkit (AWT) components to automatically generate code.

With the PDA Edition, developers can compile, run the application through Java Check, package, deploy, emulate, launch or debug with a single mouse click, resulting in a significant increase in productivity by eliminating what, until now, has been a complex manual process. Furthermore, once an application has been tested, CodeWarrior tools can automatically package the software and generate a compressed .IPK or .CAB file -- the packaging format accepted by Sharp Zaurus and Pocket PC devices, respectively -- that is ready for commercial distribution.

"Metrowerks provides a complete family of development tools for mobile devices," said C. Enrique Ortiz, co-author of MIDP for J2ME Professional developer's Guide and mobile/wireless expert. "I recommend CodeWarrior Wireless Studio to any professional developer seriously targeting PDAs or handsets."

CodeWarrior Wireless Studio works with and/or includes SDKs from leading handset vendors including Motorola, iDEN, Sony Ericsson, Siemens, Nokia, Sprint and Sun's Wireless Toolkit for creating Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME(tm)) applications and games.

"CodeWarrior has been a leading development tool for professional PersonalJava developers, and the new release, which includes technology licensed from Insignia, will allow developers to increase their productivity and focus on compelling enterprise applications that target Insignia's industry standard VM, powering virtually all Pocket PC-, Linux(R)- and Palm(R)-based PDA devices," said Peter Bernard, vice president of product marketing, Insignia Solutions. "Insignia recommends Metrowerks' tools because of their comprehensive support for our technology and features that simplify the development process."

As with other CodeWarrior Wireless Studio products, the PDA Edition also supports J2ME technology enabled handsets from Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Siemens, Sprint and others.

"Metrowerks provided the first commercial tool supporting PersonalJava technology almost three years ago. Today, CodeWarrior tools further empower the growing community of mobile Java development," said Gerardo A. Dada, senior product marketing manager, Metrowerks. "We believe the features, speed and enterprise capabilities of this release of CodeWarrior are beyond anything else in the market today."
