NOKIA ANNOUNCES SERIES 60 CHALLENGE WINNERS

First Place Finishers Hail from China, Germany, Finland

CANNES, February 17, 2003 – at the GSM Congress - Nokia today announced the selection of nine software developers from around the world as winners in the 2002 Series 60 Challenge. The competition recognizes and provides marketing opportunities for best-of-breed applications that run on Nokia’s Series 60 Platform.




In the Productivity category, Nokia awarded first prize to Germany’s Symbianware for its Stacker memory-saving compression program. China’s Noumena won in the Entertainment category with MGS Karting, a battle and racing game hybrid, and Finland’s OpenBit won in Messaging for Photographer, a camera enhancement program.

Runners-up included Germany’s Epocware and Finland’s Patria Ailon (productivity); Sweden’s Jadestone and Finland’s Sumea (entertainment); and Germany’s Mobileways and Shape Services (messaging).

In addition to a new Nokia 3650 device built on the Series 60 Platform, each of the nine winners and runners-up receives free Nokia OK certification, which can be used in marketing and advertising, and the opportunity to demonstrate its application with Nokia at tradeshows throughout 2003. Also, first place finishers have additional options in selecting free technical support from Forum Nokia, Nokia’s global developer outreach program. All submitted applications will be presented to Club Nokia and will be considered for inclusion in Nokia’s marketing campaigns. Club Nokia is an on-line community and loyalty program for Nokia phone owners.

Series 60 is a comprehensive software platform for smart phones, offering rich communications and enhanced applications. The Series 60 Platform consists of the key telephony and personal information management applications, the browser and messaging clients, and a complete and modifiable user interface, all designed to run on top of the Symbian OS, an operating system for advanced, data enabled mobile phones.

Here’s a close-up look at the top prize winners:

• Stacker is a fully automated and reliable compression system based on the industry standard LZ77 compression algorithm that makes the maximum amount of system memory available at all times.
• MGS Karting is a 3D Karting racing game that uses a new audio engine and multiple MP3 sound tracks mixed real time. It features Bluetooth support for multiplayer competition.
• Photographer is camera software for Series 60, which enhances image quality and provides zoom, panorama and trick camera functions.

The Challenge was open to registered Forum Nokia developers in Europe, Africa and Asia-Pacific who submitted MMS, Java or Symbian OS applications that run on the Series 60 Platform. Judging was done by executives from Nokia and other Series 60 licensees who looked at innovation, usefulness and quality.
