Subject: Re: Wireless Dev: Introduction
Date:  06/14/2000 09:53:14 PM
From:  Ryan Fife

Hello all!

My name is Ryan Fife. I have been developing in Java for, well, a long
time - I still remember the rough transition from 1.0 to 1.1! My interest
in wireless started while doing consulting work for Nokia in early 1999.
Being a technology geek, I started playing with WML and found that while
WML is easy, the wireless internet is hard (thanks to my buddy james for
putting my thoughts into a sensible phrase!). It was then that we (refering
to everyone at the consulting company I was working with) decided to build
AnywhereYouGo.com to help people learn from the work that we were doing -
and to learn a thing or two ourselves!

Since we've launched, I've learned a lot (and hopefully helped others along
the way!) I am co-authoring a book on WAP and will be speaking at the
Wrox Professional Wireless Developer Conference in amsterdam this july.
You can find more info about the conference at:
http://www.AnywhereYouGo.com/Event.po?id=3670

Most of our wireless lessons have been learned building the wireless sites
for AnywhereYouGo.com - we have web, WAP, and web clipping (palm VII)
versions of the site available which all pull from a common back-end.

I am currently working on integrating java servlets with a Microsoft ASP
content entry system using XML and am glad to move from the "forgiving"
world of HTML to the more strict world of XML. It creates many headaches
for me as a developer, but also releives most of the silly, annoying ones.
In the end we are able to not only publish content to the devices of today,
but the devices of tomorrow as well.

I look forward to discussing some great ideas with everyone as well as
helping out in any way I can!
