Subject: Re: Wireless Dev: Re: JSP/WML

From:  Emil Friis

Actually at CNN, where I used to work, we decided to go the opposite way. We
used to have short stories formatted for SMS on our WAP service, but it just
seemed an excessive limitation to the media. Instead we decided to put most
of the categories from the website on the phone. So what CNN is using now is
a menu with the headlines for the particular section (max 9 stories)
formatted so they would scroll - not wrap.

Then on the first page there is only the headline (wrapping this time) and
the first 2 paragraphs and a link to "MORE". It is a journalistic tradition
that the 2 first paragraphs should more or less sum up the story, so if you
were still interested you can continue to read the full story. This seemed
to work pretty well for us, but I would love some comments on this format -
especially from someone who has used the service (even though you shouldn't
expect any changes though - since I don't work there any more :-) ).

Unfortunately you can only access CNN Mobile if your carrier licenses the
content from CNN (a business model doomed quickly to be more extinct than
the dinosaurs in my opinion)
