Subject: Re: Wireless Dev: WAP unique identifier
Date:  06/15/2000 08:28:11 AM
From:  Emil Friis

Yeah, I agree there are a lot of privacy issues involved in a unique
identifier. Particularly if the phone number is a part of it as it used to
be at Sprint(still is? they announced it was going to change but I don't
know if that only applies to new phones).

On the other hand - from a developers point of view and for that matter for
the end user - it can make life a lot easier. Particularly if you are
working on an app that requires authentification. It doesn't seem like there
has been much noise about the %deviceid on the Palm VII - doesn't Palm.net
even give you the Zip-code of the device? But maybe that has something to do
with the fact that the people using Palm VII's to a large extent are the
same business people who want to access exactly that kind of information :-)

It would be great if we could also have non-technical discussions like this
here. Issues like where do we think the Wireless technologies are going and
where do we want them to go, both as developers and users.

Thanks,

Emil
