Hi Paul,
MMS will surely have its place in messaging market, but it is still a hype. You will remember that when WAP was in its hype stage, SMS became popular by "accident". Neither Ericsson nor Nokia put their weight behind it to make it popular. The subscribers saw a channel for cheaper communication and it became a market in itself. That's why I call it an 'accident'. While this accident happened, Ericsson and Nokia were busy putting their weight behind WAP.
MMS taking over SMS by 2005 may be a possibility. If you restrict your focus on Europe, parts of North America and relatively advanced Asian countries. Three things will drive it - device availability, 2.5G/3G network spread and user attitude. We can send multimedia through our emails today. But how many times we really feel need to send pictures on email from our desktops? I am sure major chunck of emailing happens on pur text information. I feel this attitude will prevail with mobile subscriber.
The uptake with age group of 16 to 27 years will be more. So it may help to find what would be the contribution of this age group in the overall subscriber base in you target markets (I don't have data.). On the other hand this age group is very sensitive to pricing. Hence operators tariff plans are going to be important.
My take: SMS will prevail and may not get overshadowed.

I have just read this in an article in 3G Mobile
"As the launch of MMS gathers pace in Europe and Asia, Ericsson last week outlined a rosy picture for the likely uptake of the service. MMS will be "larger than SMS" in terms of the number of messages sent in 2005, according to Per Lindblad, head of Ericsson's MMS."
At IBC's MMS Congress last year, there were varying forecasts, but none were this bold.
Is this yet more hype, or will MMS overshadow SMS?
I'd be interested to hear some views
Thanks
