Subject: Re: MobileLBSList: apache ??
Date:  10/30/2000 08:40:01 AM
From:  Ryan Fife

A more long-winded explanation is:

apache serves the same role in the wap world that is does in the web
world. There is some additional complexity added to the equation since
every phone contacts a wap gateway that in turn contacts the web site
using normal web protocols.

The interaction looks something like this:

phone ---> gateway ---> wap site (apache)
^ |
|-<----<- response -<----<--+
(gateway)

For serving of wap content, apache only needs to know of a few new
MIME types:
For .WML files: text/vnd.wap.wml
For .WMLC files: application/vnd.wap.wmlc
For .WMLS files: text/vnd.wap.wmlscript
For .WMLSC files: application/vnd.wap.wmlscriptc
For .WBMP files: image/vnd.wap.wbmp

But other than that, it's business as usual for apache. As far as the
gateway goes, most people will never need to purchase a gateway -
it will most likely reside at the carrier or your mobile ISP.
