Allen:
I have implemented secured WAP contents using both AT&T and Nextel's WAP gateway. (I don't have my own gateway) WTLS is used between the WAP gateway and the wireless devices and the wireless carrier should handle it. You have to implement Digital Certificates and HTTPS to handle the security between WAP gateway and your HTTP Server.
You must insure that the Digital Certificate you purchased is trusted by the WAP gateway. Unlike Internet Explorer or Netscape, the WAP browser does not allow you to configure which Certificate Authority (CA) to trust. The WAP gateway acts like a proxy for the mobile devices and has a list of trusted certificate authority. So be sure to buy a certificate from a well-trusted CA.
If you are in United States, chance are the wireless operators (including AT&T, Sprint, Nextel, GTE, Bell Atlantic ...etc.) use Phone.Com's WAP Gateway. Phone.Com's WAP gateway had a problem in dealing with VeriSign Version 3 Certificates. Phone.Com fixed the problem on 4/25/2000 but it will take sometime to have all the network operator to implement this patch. My contacts at AT&T and Nextel promise to fix this problem quickly. In the mean while I recommend people to use RSA commercial certificate.
Hope this information helps.

If I want to serve secure WAP content from my current web server do I need to have a WAP GateWay in order to use WTLS?
