Subject: [lbs] Need your suggestions / opinions on Linux WLAN Driver Porting
Date:  02/22/2005 08:40:01 AM
From:  Harsha Archak

Hi,

Greetings !

Hope you are doing fine.

I am a newcomer, working on Embedded Linux Device Driver WLAN Porting
for a Consumer Electronic Product. I have some clarifications /
queries for which I need your attention and seek your suitable
suggestions / opinions in this regard.

Please find some of the following questions.

1] What are the pre-requisite knowledge needed for successful
implementation of Linux WLAN Device Driver Porting for a
specific platform ( ARM, PPC etc ... ) ?
Is C language sufficient ? Is C++ / Embedded Java used ?

2] As you know, there has to be some interaction between Host PC
Windows platform and the Target Platform ( ARM, PPC etc .. with
Linux kernel ). Now, with this setup, how does the driver
( Linux WLAN ) communicates with the Host well as Target ( from PC
--> to Target ) ?
What are the underlying areas that need to be considered for a
Target OS and Processor to recognise Linux WLAN Driver ? How
does it differ for USB, PCI, miniPCI or other Card
Adapters ?

3] What are the Embedded Linux Development tools do you prefer for
Development / Testing of Linux WLAN ?

4] In the case of Linux WLAN, in order to port existing driver
towards a specific platform / OS,
what are the important customization features that needed to be
taken care of, for its successful implementation.

5] Please provide some Debugging / Testing methodologies for Linux
WLAN Driver Porting, irrespective of platform / OS
specific.

6] W.r.t customization of driver for a specific platform / OS, what
are the essential technical facts to be considered ?

7] Under Embedded Linux, for a Digital Home Entertainment product,
what are the key issues / points to be considered for Porting
Device Drivers ( WLAN for example ) to a specific platform
/ OS ?

8] In your opinion, what is the typical time duration needed for
successful Linux WLAN Driver Porting ?

9] Please suggest me some reference links / books for related
information ( Linux WLAN Driver Porting, focussing on
Customization features ).

10] What are the tool chains, build-up tools utilised in this case.
Which is the convenient bootloader ( Redboot, U_boot, etc
.... ) ? Is there any link with WLAN Driver ? Are there any
changes to be done in the settings / configuration of Driver WLAN
w.r.t bootloader ?

I will be grateful for your answers to my queries.

Looking forward to receive prompt and quick response,

Thanks and regards,
