Very interesting that you're starting to see more and more of this in the American "general" press (i.e. MSNBC) as opposed to the tech press (ZDNet, CNet, etc.). Meanwhile, in general, I'd say that the U.S. press is absolutely in love with the PDA (Palm/CE/etc). Every time I see an article like this, discussions break out on other lists I subscribe to (no names mentioned) and proclaim that the journalists "don't get it" or else it's "typical US bias", etc., etc. I think that these sound like the same complaints that the MacOS/OS2 lovers were making ten years ago.
Bottom line: whether misguided, confused, or whatever - the general public, by definition, makes or breaks mass market technologies. If it's not a great solution, it's toast.
