Subject: Wireless Dev: PC Expo Not So PC
Date:  06/29/2000 08:06:28 AM
From:  Bryan Morgan

I find it very interesting that all of the news coming out of PC Expo
revolves around handheld appliances...guess it's time to redefine what a
"personal" computer really is.

Interesting News:

* Sony unveiled their device running PalmOS: given their past results with
the consumer market, I'd look for the PalmOS interface to show up on a home
CD player or car stereo near you.

* In other news, seemingly to annoy Sony and Handspring, Palm has announced
that they will support the Secure Digital card format for expansion
(http://www.wirelessdevnet.com/news/2000/178/news9.html). The good news is
that this makes the fifth expansion technology supported by the Palm
platform...showing its extensibility. The bad news is that this is the
fifth expansion technology supported by the Palm platform.

* Transmeta is starting to roll and it's becoming clear that they're
attacking the laptop market that Intel has owned up to this point. IBM,
Hitachi, Fujitsu, and NEC will all roll out product in the 2nd half of 2000
running Transmeta chips. Now if I could only get on THEIR IPO!

* Dell has formed a wireless division to focus on wireless LAN products and
will include a wireless LAN card and antenna with its new Latitude products
shipping in September

* Jeff Hawkins, inventor of the Palm and founder of Handspring, also gave a
keynote and basically predicted the first generation of wireless access to
be a failure based on incomplete business models, faulty technology,
slow/high-powered devices, and high prices. He did say however that
handheld computing is the future...surprise, surprise!
