Subject: Re: Wireless Dev: Jakob Nielsen on WAP

From:  Dude Java

Next generation of WAP, will that be 2.5G or 3G? What
about carriers and manufacturers are they going to
adopt the next generation by next 4-6 months?

I am very optimistic but when it comes to large
corporations and quick profits, I will have to think
twice.

His advice:

* Skip the current generation of WAP
* Prepare to launch mobile services for the
next-generation systems in 2001

I think it shows how new to the industry he is if he
thinks the
next-generation systems will be ready in 2001 :-)

Also, "WAP has miserable usability for many reasons:
ridiculously small
screens, slow bandwidth, and the need to place a new
call every time the
device needs to connect."

Screens, bandwidth, and placing the call are all
"features" of the existing
networks and carrier interface devices. These have
nothing to do with WAP
and everything to do with the idea of running mobile
applications off of a
phone. Give me my Palm VII any day of the week...
