Subject: Wireless Dev: Article on Bluetooth
Date:  06/13/2000 01:16:25 PM
From:  Marc H. Robards

ZDNet Anchordesk has an article from Jesse Berst where he gives his
opinion on the future of Bluetooth.

From the article:

--------
BLUETOOTH CAVITIES
The Bluetooth story may not be all smiles forever.

Security. Bluetooth-enabled devices don't provide the level of security
that big businesses want. And the range of 100 feet gets seriously
compromised when walls go up between devices.

Speed. The standard speed for wireless Ethernet connections is now
approaching 10 Mbps. Bluetooth's top speed is about 720 Kbps. Click for
more.

Interference. Bluetooth supporters say they don't compete with the
HomeRF and 802.11B standards vying for wireless networking dominance,
but a pending FCC ruling allowing HomeRF to operate at a faster speed
could cause interference with Bluetooth devices.

But the biggest threat to the health and growth of the Bluetooth
standard isn't the technology, it's the same thing that has derailed
most industry consortiums: Greed.

Does anyone agree? I definitely agree with the greed factor...

Marc
